I remember reading somewhere that they considered bringing Catherine Hicks back in V and marrying her off to Kirk.

Which would have been a heck of a progression, from a kiss on the cheek at the end of IV to married in V. Anyone else ever heard this? I seem to recall there being more of a romantic element in the novelization to IV.

That would be bigamy. She was already married to Decker after he dumped V'ger and returned to 20th century Earth and started a large economically unsupportable family.

Never in V, once it was obviously Shatner's baby. IIRC, there was a strong female character Shatner had in mind for his "fountain of youth" idea, but that character became Teilani in the Shatner ST novels. No Gillian there.

But certainly, when a studio tries to repeat a movie that has turned out to be a money-spinner, they certainly create a shopping list of elements that worked well and might be worth revisiting in the next film.

I got the impression that Gillian wasn't really interested in Kirk. That last scene they had together in IV, definitely looked like she was trying to get rid of him.

I said something similar when I reviewed the movie...the main thing that I find troubling was how awkward the kiss was. She looked really reluctant to kiss him, even just a peck on the cheek! Others speculated it might have been due to the real life lack of attraction from the actress to pudgy, aging Shatner. They were very cute and playful together in some of their other scenes in the restaurant, truck, and ship, but their farewell wasn't the least bit passionate. That's why I think there's no way she could have been a plausible wife for him.

My impression was that she was definitely interested, but suddenly the adventure of being dropped into the 23rd century opened up so many new possibilities, she wasn't simply wasn't ready to settle down yet at all.

And TMF, seriously, I've heard even younger ladies still think Shatner's attractive even now, never mind then. The dude's got charisma.

I think it would have been silly to bring her character to the 23rd Century if they never intended for her to show up in other movies. I just figured the writers eventually forgot about her.

I don't think there was ever supposed to be chemistry between him and Gillian. She started out thinking he was a nut and some of that probably never completely slid off of her.

BTW, off topic, anyone think it would have been really nice if, in generations, Joan Collins walked into the cabin while Kirk and Picard were talking? Much better than that Antinia character they just threw in out of nowhere.

I just figured the writers eventually forgot about her.

Daniels was waiting in the hallway and re-kidnapped her back to the 20th century during the credits.

IRC, doesn't the retirement happen pre-STII? If that's the case, then Carol as the girl hew as living with wouldn't work chronologically speaking. That being said, it would work if it was just before he boarded the 1701-B.

The original beginning of ST VI was going to feature "the last round-up" of Kirk's crew. Kirk was living with Carol Marcus, Chekov was losing a poker game to a Betazoid, Scotty was lecturing cadets about the Klingon bird of prey that had been retrieved from San Francisco Bay, etc...

The ST VI novelization ended up having the Klingons attack Carol's new science base, putting her into hospital, explaining why Kirk is so aggressively anti-Klingons in the movie.

The novelization of "Generations" has Nexus Kirk reliving his romances with a number of women. Sometimes Antonia, sometimes Carol, sometimes Edith, sometimes Miramanee, etc, IIRC.

Gillian appears in the DC comics graphic novel DEBT OF HONOR (By Chris Claremont and Adam Hughes), where Kirk is on shore leave with her (and witness the birth of Gracie's infant). Not canon of course, but still a fun tale.
