Gift idea/Care Package for someone getting Gastric Bypass?

Hi,

Random question---someone close to me will be getting Gastric Bypass surgery in a few months and I know that he will have great eating restrictions afterwards which he is worried about. He will be out of work for a couple of weeks and I wanted to get him a very carefully selected, thoughtful care package.

If anyone here has had that surgery before, what sorts of food did you eat? What can I put into a thoughtful care package? I don't want it to end up being filled with stuff that he can't use.

Thanks! :bolian:

Okay, thanks!

We have so many people on this board that I thought maybe someone has had that surgery before. I just wanted some first hand knowledge I guess.

I guess I will scour the interwebs for info. :)

My mom had her stomach removed after stomach cancer, so essentially it was gastric bypass. Her surgery was very similar to what people having weight loss surgery get, so she sought a lot of advice from that community. What we've learned over the years is that everyone has very different experiences when it comes to what and how much they can eat after. Some people can't eat a single bean, others can eat mounds of them. Some can't eat leafy greens, others still dig into salads. They get this thing called "dumping syndrome" which is extremely painful, but no one knows for sure what foods will trigger it until it happens, because for everyone it's different. My mom's triggers are noodles and creamy things, like mashed potatoes. The long and short of it is, I'd advise against sending any food at all. Fill his care package with things he enjoys that will keep him entertained.

Okay that's good advice, thanks!

I would assume that certain things like soup broth would be okay for everyone? He hates going food shopping so I wanted to at least get him a few foods.
