GhostBusters 3 is Finally Being Made. (2020 Release)

What's the point of drive in theaters? You are like half a mile from the screen, the lighting isn't perfect so video quality is off, you are limited to FM quality audio which is worse than what an old VHS can give you... SO ah... why?

Kids.

There's just a fun charm to them. It's not about the quality of the video or audio, it's just the experience of it it. Being outside, being in a more socially active environment, hell, paying one price and sticking around to see 2 or 3 movies! It's just generally fun! I had a blast as a kid (in the '80s) go to the drive in. And hearing it through the car speakers? HA! That kind of technology was a marvel! People are lucky to have that! We listened to it through a shitty little can-thing you hung on the window!

Not to mention...

1.) MUCH cheaper than a ticker at a regular theater
2.) I can bring my own food and drinks so I can have a little whiskey with my coke and save LOTS of money compared to what I usually pay for extremely overpriced popcorn and coke. Yes I know that's where theaters make their money, but I still refuse to pay close to $20 for a bag of popcorn and cup of coke. I can eat at a buffet for that price.
3.) Don't have to deal with obnoxious people right next to you who don't know when to shut up after the movie starts or turn off their cells. You are in your car and the speaker is right next to you.

Most of my movie watching these days are at home, but if I do go to a theater, it's drive in.

Hell, you can still get that shitty can-thing (now cordless, using Bluetooth) upon request if your FM radio or car speakers aren't up to scratch. :guffaw:You could also get mosquito repellent (a little coil thing you light up) and, if the weather ain't good, a Drizzle Guard (plastic canopy you put over your windshield with suction cups so you don't have to use the wipers).

For smokers (not me), a drive-in also means you don't have to resist the urge to 'flick your Bic'. Some drive-ins include a playground directly in front of the screen, so parents can let their kids burn off some energy before the first film if they get there soon enough. On the weekends, drive-ins also double as swap shops in the daytime hours.

Take a stroll through YouTube sometime if you're feeling nostalgic - there are TONS of old drive-in ads (or snipes as they call 'em), intermission reels and classic movie trailers online now, in DVD or HD quality.

I'd LOVE to be able to go to drive-in again.

It's funny because objectively it does seem like a subpar experience but there was just something weirdly magical about watching a movie from inside your car. Inside your car!!! lol

In this case, it's a compromise. Sure, it's not perfect, but I think it's a great idea to kickstart the idea of going back to theatres, and it's certainly better than not being able to go at all. Sadly, a lot of drive-ins no longer exist depending on where you live, and while 3D and deluxe seating might have been one of the big advantages of a regular theatre, I think they can make a play at nostalgia and have studios start to show off their recent movies again.

It's probably too late to steer this back on topic again, so I'll just say... looking forward to talking about this movie with y'all again next spring.

OK, I guess we're still in business here.

Ghostbusters: Year One #4 came out, and it did indeed end in a big honking Afterlife teaser:
As the female reporter who's been interviewing the boys about their untold early experiences finishes her interview with Egon, she's suddenly possessed - by Gozer! "Your luck won't last forever, Dr. Spengler. I could destroy you right now... but it is not your time. Not yet. Your doom is coming, though, and you can't prevent it. I want this knowledge to consume you. To punish you. Sooner... later... DOOM!!!"

The reporter is released from Gozer's grip and, freaked out, runs out of the under-reconstruction firehouse. "What'd the ghost want?" Venkman asks.
"I don't know, Peter. But I promise you, I'll find out."

Not really related to the new movie per se but I didn't want to make a whole new thread for this,
a wild Rick Moranis sighting:

He’s making a comeback. Rumor has it he’s going to appear in a new Honey I Shrunk the Kids movie on Disney Plus.

It is more than a rumor. It was announced in all industry press early February. It feels like an eternity ago with everything that has happened since. Also he appeared in an episode of the Disney + Series Prop Culture which was devoted to props from the original movie. Most likely filmed last year debuted in May. All of this is him slowly re-emerging.

With the delay in Ghostbusters it would be epic if as a late addition he did a post credit scene as Louis.

Fun night out with the family? Not everything needs to be about picture and sound quality.

Necking...

We used to have no less than four drive-ins in Albuquerque, but now there are none. In Farmington, NM, the locally owned theater chain has a white screen set up on their big theater building and are showing movies in the parking lot. Haven't gone there yet, but by all accounts, people are really enjoying it.

Was there a subsequent drop in birth rates?

Drive ins aren’t really a thing in my country. They exist in my head as folksy Americana,

That's pretty funny.. I wonder...

Definitely "folksy Americana." And that is a good thing. Even in larger American cities during the mid to late 1900s, there was space in town enough to host a couple of hundred cars for this kind of thing. But as real estate values skyrocketed, it made more sense to sell off the property and develop it into business parks and high rises. Add to that, the added comfort and "added value" of indoor theaters including better seating and THX quality digital sound. Even when I went to drive-ins in the mid-80s, they were quaint and obsolete. It was more about the social gathering than the "pure" theatrical experience.

As soon as this pandemic stuff is over, our re-kindled love affair with drive-ins will be over as well. I miss the leather recliners and surround sound my local movie theater offers.
