Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

I was always a huge fan of hers on SNL but I haven't seen too many of her movies. (Bridesmaids sounded a bit too scatological for me.) But I very strongly recommend The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I fell in love with her in a whole different way in that movie.

I'm referring to his character in the movie, but yes, he
was forced to resign after telling the Hermes crew how to rescue Watney.
This wasn't in the novel though, just the movie.

Ah gotcha.
I thought it was an implied forced resignation if things went bosoms skyward in both versions. Sigh centre they didn't I assumed he would keep his job having saved the day.

This is true, but I would add that, as I've pointed out before, it's not "the trailer," it's one of the trailers. No film has just one trailer anymore. We've already seen a teaser trailer, a US trailer, and an international trailer, and they've all been different from each other. We will inevitably see more, and each trailer will be skewed to emphasize different aspects of the movie, because that is the routine formula used by the small number of marketing firms that make most movie trailers these days.

So we need to stop thinking in terms of "the trailer." Each trailer needs to be understood as just one step in a larger campaign. The teaser and the first full trailer are bound to be deliberately incomplete in their presentation of the film, because some things are being saved for later in the trailer campaign.

There's a lot of truth, but can I throw out some nuance... each trailer can build the buzz for or against a movie.

The first trailer is the snowball at the top of the hill, and can build more momentum, like the first Star Wars trailer.

Also, are there nay examples of wildly different trailers/ads that helped a movie? The only thing I can think of is Deadpool (was anyone fulled by the romantic movie posters?)

Good trailers can create a good opening for a movie -- the resulting reviews that either crash it, or keep it going.

The way I see it, it can breakdown like this (blanking out on examples for most):
A good trailer can represent the substance of a film, if it's a good/enjoyable film. So Star Wars the Force Awakens had points that touched fans....but the film was filled with that. So I think people would say the successful trailer represented the film.

A good trailer can also get people excited about a film that might not actually be that good, but get people interested enough to check it out (I am thinking Skyline)

It's possible to have a bad trailer for a good movie, and that's just disappointing.

And bad trailers for bad movies... well that's a dime a dozen (literally)

Also, a good trailer can get people excited for other trailers, or at least alert people of different interests, who might pay attention when they get "their" trailer. Deadpool seems like an excellent example.

Sure. The people who make trailers are trying to sell the film, but sometimes they do a better job of it than others. Sometimes their idea of what the film is about or how it should be presented is at odds with what the filmmakers intended. So audiences should try to keep in mind that the commercial is not the product. A bad trailer can just be a failure of marketing rather than a warning sign of a bad movie. All advertising should be viewed skeptically, and trailers are advertising.

I think it's far more telling that every time anything is mentioned about the movie, such as in an article or, say, a TrekBBS thread, the first thing mentioned and the thing most talking about is that it has women in it. Not that it looks hilarious, not that it looks to be well directed or well written, not that its destined to be a classic. Just that it has women in it. That's apparently the best, the most important, and the most interesting feature of the movie.

And apparently, that's supposed to be a good thing. That the number one talking point is that women are leading a movie. Because that's totally what real feminists would prefer to see; pure, unbridled condescension.

I think it's far more telling that this is the single thing you chose to focus on regarding this movie. If it's on your mind, of course you're going to "notice" that everything you read about it seems to mention the fact that it's all women.

Yeah, nice try.

I didn't come up with the title of this thread. I didn't write practically every single article about it both online and off. And I'm the one pointing out how stupid it is to focus on that aspect of it in the first place rather than what actually counts.

But yeah, you keep trying to turn it around like it's my fault.

Well, the title was changed in an attempt to stick it to those who had a problem with it starring women. And that change has lasted long after the discussion has moved on from that for the most part.

I really couldn't care less if it has women in it or not. Is it going to be funny? Sadly, from the trailers, I have to say it will not be.

I wasn't impressed by the trailer or the actresses playing the NuGhostbusters. Most ghosbuster fans wanted a reunion of the original movies actors(We lost Harold Ramis AKA Egon so its to late now) but instead we get this reboot that no one really wanted. Nope I will pass this one up and save my money. I will probably wait for it to go onto free TV to watch it. From the trailers it looks absolutely horrible.
