Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

Agreed. Just to clarify, I don't think Feig wants to do pure horror, just that he wants to hit the right scare notes along with the comedy. It seems some people think this is going to be Bridesmaids: Ghostbusters Edition, or something, and I think he wants to dispel that notion.

I've always wanted a scarier Ghostbusters -- there are times when the cartoon episodes and the video game itself had some very genuine thrills to it, but I agree, Feig would try to balance horror and comedy. It would be odd of him to hire four comedic actresses to do pure horror.

Vigo scared the crap out of me in GB2. That's as horror as I'd ever want this shit to get!

I think back and Vigo was a decent enough threat -- mind controlling Janosz and kidnapping Oscar were certainly up there. I'm just disappointed by the climax -- Vigo was big enough that seeing the Ghostbusters rappel down to fanfare made for a cool heroic moment, but the ultimate solution was sing until he gets weak, and then shoot him 'till he died. No fault on Vigo's part other than the anticlimactic way he was defeated.

So... despite months of appearances to the contrary, Aykroyd will continue to be Ghostbusters-relevant in the years ahead after all?! :cardie:

Time for a freaking drink:

There are also plans for a TV series too. I've always thought a Ghostbusters series in the style of Stargate SG-1 could be successful.

So basically Sony have just taken their old franchise IP plan, scribbled out the word "Spider-man" and crayoned in "Ghostbusters"? Yay..?

It could work, actually. If they keep the Akroyd crew in NY, and maybe a different city for the new crew (New Orleans, DC, as I've proposed earlier in the thread), they could work in the franchise angle. I don't see how that could be a problem as they could work in parallel. On the other hand, announcing this so soon almost strikes me as a conflict of interest.

Disney did the same with Star Wars. Maybe it's the new way for franchises. I suspect the Marvel model of having several irons in the fire may have turned some heads.

Maybe, but even then it might have been better to wait until the other one had gained a bit more traction. This way, it almost seems like it's stepping on toes to rush to the cake so they can have a feast. Makes it look like they have two movies competing for attention when they haven't even gotten off the ground yet.

Didn't 'Aint it North Korea' release that information months ago? It's been on the cards for a while it seems and was more than just a cock block reaction.

It was from the Sony leaks definitely, which shows that ideas were being tossed around, but Sony just officially commissioned Aykroyd and Reitman to form the Ghost Corps group to oversee reboot-related expansion. So it went from idea to development, which often takes months anyway.

This Cracked article makes a good case for why wanting a Ghostbusters franchise is kind of ridiculous. The Ghostbusters section (as is the rest of the article) is an interesting read but this part in particular stands out to me:

Let me ask you all a question, and feel free to write your answer down or just speak it aloud to whatever room you happen to be sitting in -- what was it about Ghostbusters that made that movie so great?

Was it the rich, sprawling mythology of the ghostbusting universe?

Or was it Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis teaming up to make a comedy in the prime of their careers?

Can we call this cock-blocked? Sony has plans to do a male led Ghostbusters reboot alongside their female led version.

Not so much cock-block as let's-bleed-money-out-of-this-franchise-until-it's-dry.

It kind of feels like the ultimate "be careful what you wish for" scenario.

"You've been saying you want more Ghostbusters for 25 goddamn years? Here! Here, have all the fucking Ghostbusters! Have them until you choke on them, you fucks!"

Not everything needs to be a goddamn "cinematic universe" or whatever. This whole thing sounds like executives and marketing looking at Marvel's success without any fucking clue as to why it works beyond "lots of movies."

Let's just abandon all pretense and go nuts. Let's have a rebooted 1990s Kevin Costner Cinematic Universe featuring a Costnerverse All-Star Team-Up in which Robin Hood, Wyatt Earp, the Postman and the Waterworld Mariner team up to protect Whitney Houston from a time-traveling Eliot Ness.
