Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

Paul Feig reveals cast on Twitter. The new Ghostbusters:

Kristen Wiig
Melissa McCarthy
Leslie Jones
Kate McKinnon

McCarthy though is supposedly the only one is has officially signed on, but the other three are supposedly expected to sign on as well.

That's a pretty SNL heavy cast. Jones and McKinnon are both current SNL cast members, and Wiig is a former.

Cool. I'm particularly jazzed that Wiig and McKinnon are involved. Could be a lot of fun.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

Well, I don't know the other three, but McCarthy is horrible. I predict enough fat jokes to make the audience riot. I don't know who they're making this movie for, but it would seem to not be for fans of the first ones. Or fans of good comedy, but that's fairly subjective I guess. Looking at IMDB, besides McCarthy, we have three people from SNL, a show which (in my opinion) hasn't had a really funny person since I was a toddler (its produced successful people since then, but we're talking Adam Sandler level of comedy). Well, I figured this would be the case. I was never very invested in a GB sequel without the main cast anyway, so this is just another D-list comedy to ignore, like the stuff Adam Sandler shoves out every so often.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

Ouch.

That lineup makes me feel their going for a expanded SNL skit with this film, a parody of the orignal. Hope I am wrong...

Apparently you've never watched SNL since you were a toddler, because the show has a pretty strong line up right now. Including McKinnon, who's going to surprise a lot of people with this movie.

Comedy is very subjective. I haven't found any SNL even remotely funny for a long time, certainly none since I've been old enough to watch it. Talking about stuff that was before I was born/when I was young, the mid nineties is the last SNL that makes me laugh, and even then it had some pretty bad cast members. Current SNL is just depressingly bad, we're talking mediocre MadTV level comedy, and MadTV wasn't very good.

I mean, its not like I've ever had SNL as a show I regularly watch, but I can see the old stuff on TV and laugh, and sometimes I'll actively look for old stuff to watch for a laugh. New SNL is just about as far away from funny as they can get, at least for me. But, everyone finds different things funny. Some people thing Melissa McCarthy is funny, I think she's one of the most horribly unfunny comedians I've ever seen. Of all the things to argue about, comedy is probably one of the most subjective. I don't particularly feel like arguing about it. I see a modern day SNL sketch and just get embarrassed for them, I watch stuff with people like Mike Myers, or really old SNL stuff with Chevy Chase and laugh. Its as simple as that.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

McKinnon is one of the best things on SNL right know. Her Bieber cracks me up.

Jones is good too. A very different style than you usually see on SNL.

Wiig is kind of hit or miss for me. But when she hits, she can knock it out of the park.

Not sold on McCarthy.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

A 90 minute SNL skit that Ghostbusters fans are forced to pay to watch. No thanks! :p

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

Well... these SNL bashing posts are an understandable reaction but *ahem* don't forget Danny Boy and even the Great Bill Murray were once a part of the same troop. ;) So it's really not that odd an idea if you think about it along those lines (of 1980s cocaine).

Have you seen Kate Mckinnon on SNL? She's actually really funny on the show, and that's why I think she'll be great in the movie.

I agree with you about McCarthy though.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

I have no problem with these actresses, but I'm still having a hard time seeing the point in an entirely female-led Ghostbusters. Having a couple of women like Wiig or McKinnon on the team would be perfectly fine (and actually pretty cool), but making all four of them women?

It still just feels like a gimmick to me.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

I don't know if we can assign roles just yet, but I would think that if anyone on that list were the analogue for Murray/Venkman, I would think it would be Kristin Wiig. She got plenty of critical acclaim for her work in The Skeleton Twins, which is a dramedy, and she was also one of Bill Murray's choices for Ghostbusters when he came up with the idea of an all-female team in the first place.

The way to go is to not have analogues.

Agreed, but the team is naturally going to have a leader figure in there, and Wiig is arguably as big a name as McCarthy, in the same way that Murray/Aykroyd were back in the day. Wiig is probably going to emerge the same way Murray did.

Because it's women instead of men. I'm not saying you're trying to be sexist or anything, but the idea of four female leads in a movie not dedicated to crazy women things? That feels like it's pandering, or a gimmick. That needs to change.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

I'm completely out of touch with modern day SNL, so I'm mostly unfamiliar with the choices aside from a few voice-only appearances (Despicable Me 1 & 2, Toy Story of Terror!), although I did love Wiig in Despicable Me 2. I've only heard bad things about McCarthy but I've never seen her in anything, so I'll probably be giving her a fairer shake than most here it seems.

Any SNL episodes/sketches that I should check out that best exemplify the talents of Wiig, McKinnon and Jones?

Is it a gimmick when the main characters in a movie are all male?

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

Depends on the movie. If they announced a Bridesmaids remake featuring all men, I think it would. Or a male version of Mean Girls. Or they decided to remake Thelma and Louise with a couple of dudes instead of women.

I certainly have no problem with female-led comedies or action movies or dramas, and watch them all the time. And I don't even care if the Ghostbusters are made up of all men or not (as I said before). But on the surface it just doesn't seem like there's much more to this current idea than "hey, wouldn't it be cool if they were all women this time?"

Instead of "Hey, what would be a good new Ghostbusters story to tell, and who are the best comedians around (men or women) that we could get to play them?", which to me would be the better way to approach it.

The movie is going to be a bit darker, with more horror elements than the originals. Plus, it has been 25 years since the last Ghostbusters movie, so a remake was inevitable. This isn't a gimmick just because it has four female leads.

Re: Ghostbusters reboot: We're (almost, maybe, sorta) ready to believe

Don't care about the chromosomes, but was kinda hoping the group would be a bit more ethnically diverese, like with Lucy Liu or Salma Hayek in the group...
Maybe they have a male chef/friend who isn't white or black?!?

If Charlie's Angels became all male and that decision was made before casting even started, then yes I think it might be. From the start this has been reported as the "hook" for this remake/sequel.
