Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

The previews to the new Ghostbusters look awful. If the reviews/word-of-mouth are good, I'll watch it. I don;t care if the Ghostbusters are women, if Star Trek and Star Wars have gays, if James Bond and Batman are black or if Spiderman is a black, Jewish homosexual. If the movie/tv show looks interesting and gets good buzz, I'll watch it.

Why do this movie's trailers have to be gut-bustingly funny for people? I've had no problems with them at all myself; I thought that the ghost spewing ectoplasam on one character and her saying 'That went everywhere-in every crack' was quite funny. It seems people ASSume that funny has to be really really stupid.

Another article on the sexism of the people objecting to the movie, for those that don't think something like that exists, from a guy: New All-Feminist Ghostbusters Is A Punch in the Dick to All of Mankind

The rest of the cast have that fairly interchangable and ubiquitous white girl snark.

Just like the male characters in the 1984 original had their interchangeable and ubiquitous white guy snark. How different is one kind of snark from the other?:vulcan:

Because its the job of the trailer to convince audiences to see the film, not undersell it, or reveal things that do not help the case of the film. Since some suggest this film is a comedy, the trailer's job is to get the audience happy--giddy about seeing the film. If its failing to do that, then there might be a problem with content.

You can post as many misguided articles as you like, but hollow, reaching "articles" do not prove the imagined "sexism"; more to the point, certain Social Justice Warriors see offense in everything, oft times where none exists.

It's really either ignorant or gutless to quote only part of what a person says just to be able to make your own point.

Who is here saying that sexism doesnt exist? The objection is over the use of the sexism card just because of negative reaction to a trailer. If you can show proof that these people always have that reaction to movies with female leads then you would have a case.

That may be true most of the time (and I usually agree with that sentiment most of the time), but not this time. And the rest of the world feels like that too, even if most of you here don't.

The ladies of the cast have spoken about said non-sexism in two recent articles. I still agree with what they've said in said articles.

There are two groups who are complaining. 1. The sexist troglodytes who don't want the Ghostbusters to be women and 2. People who are unimpressed by the trailers. These two groups are separate groups of people. The 1st group would still be unhappy even if the trailer was brilliant. The 2nd group don't care who is in the movie as long as the trailer looks good.

^^^And that's really the source of a lot of frustration. You're right, these two separate groups are often lumped together, and turns off the people who are not impressed by the trailer even more. I get that, and I feel bad that's happening. I may have been guilty of that at first, at least I assumed most people were put off for that reason, but that's not the case here.

I'm one of those Group 2 people.
I was cautious about it at first cause it did seem they were doing the casting to make a statement but I wasn't dismissing it offhand. The cartoons have had female Ghostbusters after all so no biggie to this fan.
The trailers did not impress me with the dialogue at all. The CGI looked ok and I don't get the gripe by those complaining that it, the F/X, look bad. The jokes just all fell super flat to me.

I think Paul Feig wanted to this with women because he likes to work with women not necessarily to make a point about equality or feminism. Like it would be weird to imagine Paul Feig working with an all male cast. However, because of the sexist response the movie/production is now being elevated as making a statement when I think it was originally just a movie with women ghostbusters. So in a weird way it's like they are trying to make the movie worthy of the ire it's provoked. Of course, all of this just fuels the other side which then makes the others double down and so on which has gotten it all out of proportion. (Or I'm just nuts and completely wrong about all of this which is quite possible)

I feel like this is the fifth time I've said this: Comedy trailers are incredibly difficult to cut. When there's a really good one, like Ted, then everyone complains that all the good jokes were given away in the previews. The only other approach is to just do some really broad strokes about the concept. This is especially true in the case of Paul Feig's movies, because so, so many of his jokes rely on slow-burn payoffs. I don't think any of his movies have had good trailers (the ones for Bridesmaids and Spy were particularly terrible), yet I can't think of a single bad thing he's directed or written / co-written.

Neither Bridesmaids nor the Heat was actually funny. Although Wiig was at least mildly entertaining in Bridesmaids. I never bothered with Spy.

Spy was better than I expected with some funny moments. It might be a better barometer for Ghostbusters being both more recent and because it incorporates a less domestic plot. The spy plot, like Ghostbusters, gives something to chew on than just the funny. That's part of what makes this one hard to judge because the ghostbusting action and story offer more than just the jokes, hopefully the sum adds up to more than the parts.

Bit like Extreme Ghostbusters.

It wasn't terrible, but "The Heat" left me pretty cold.
I hated Heat. Felt it was a horrid film. Sandra Bullock saves it some. Melissa's character is just too over the top to be believable at all. Tammy may just be a worse film though but that's faint and damning praise towards Heat really.

Well, especially with dialogue-driven comedies, it's just hard to figure out what it'll be from a two-minute ad. For example, "That's a big Twinkie" is one of the lines that everyone remembers from the original movie, and it's hilarious, but taken out of context, it means absolutely nothing, it's a punchline without any of the setup.

I try not to judge a movie by the trailers. I say "try", because sometimes I do. Sometimes, my opinion of the trailer ends up being justified when I actually see the movie. And sometimes, I end up with a completely different view of the movie than I do with the trailer.

"Back off man, I'm a scientist" would also fall into that twinkie example I'd think.

Any of the really classic punchlines, honestly. Ray's earnest "Well, that wasn't such a chore now, was it?" only works because it comes after fifteen minutes of tearing up a hotel. All those great jokes require a lot of setup, and Feig's humor works in much the same way. That's why I'm still optimistic (although that song is terrible).
