Getting a PS4.

Out of curiosity, why isn't The Last of Us "your kind of game?" It's made by the same people as Uncharted and has almost exactly the same style of gameplay.

I'm a bit tired of post-apocalyptic games i guess...

You should still really give it a shot. It is a fantastic game. I've seen codes go for as low as $10 (I think I paid ~$15). It's by the same developers as the Uncharted games and it sets the bar for them.

It also feels like it's in the same niche as the game with the origani killer or the one with the ghost...
Again, not my cup of tea...

Not even close. It's more of an action game with an emphasis on stealth and survival with a large dose of story. Not even comparable. The one you're thinking of, you're just pressing a bunch of buttons in specific progression to move the story forward, and Last of Us is definitely not that.

In terms of Gameplay, The Last of Us basically a stealthier version of Uncharted. But it also has plenty of shooting and blowing stuff up.

Agreed. The Last of Us is, to me, a perfect video game. The second that I personally have ever rated as such. The only one before that was Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. I am eager for MGS5: The Phantom Pain, based on my experience with the teaser game Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes.

When I saw the first five minutes of The Last of Us, I couldn't recall a video game that made me cry. The opening sequence was that well done. The gameplay, very much a stealthier shoot em up than Uncharted (another game series I love).

And the gameplay was plentiful. Far more than the naysayers let on, or are willing to believe.

I'll take The Last of Us over Mario/Metroid games any day.

I do not mean to disparage those who enjoy Mario and such. I'm sure they are pleasant diversions. But, ever since games went to 3D freedom (Descent, Tomb Raider, etc...), it's just been impossible for me to even want to go back to 2D scrollers and platformers.

If you didn't mean to disparage those with different tastes you wouldn't have called those games "pleasant diversions".

Anyway, we're talking about two different types of gameplay experiences. Raw mechanics vs narrative immersion. The Last of Us (and Uncharted and Batman) intentionally has shallow gameplay mechanics to not get in the way of the immersion factor. Dark Souls style combat and challenge with the accompanying deaths would only serve to break the grip the narrative has over you.

On the other hand, platformers and shmups (my two favourite genres) are pretty much pure mechanics. Story is minimal at best and everything in the game is designed around making interacting with those mechanics as fun as possible.

Yeah, i like Little Big Planet or the Rayman games as much as i like Uncharted or GTA...
Activated Ps+, downloading MGS:Ground Zeros now...

My intent not to disparage was sincere. (rest is redacted....sounded combative)

If I wanted to disparage those with different tastes, I would have said something like "those who are into kiddie games." But I didn't because Mario (and similar games) are for everyone (hence the usual E ratings). To me, they seem like pleasant diversions, but that does not mean I say that as any insult. A game that anyone enjoys playing is, by definition, a pleasant diversion. That means that games like "The Last of Us", "Uncharted", "Destiny", "Batman Arkham series", and others are pleasant diversions to me, just like Mario and other platformers and shmups are pleasant diversions to you.

I would say that they are no more shallow than Mario games. And again, it is not offered in offense or disparagement. Just a point of view.

As has always been said: different strokes for different folks. :)

Exactly what is it that's so deep about Mario's gameplay mechanics again? I'm getting stuck once I've covered "run" and "jump".
