Getting a cat. Need startup advice.

Call it whatever you want... cats have this tendency to not pay any attention to their human-given name being called anyway.

I call both my cats several things other than their names, most of them printable ;)

I always thought if I had a black cat, I'd name it Sabbath.

I got to watch my dad and my cat argue over the couch tonight.

She's the only cat I've ever had that has no problem telling him to shove off.

I call my cat "Kitty" or "Look at you!" or "You're so little!" Her actual name is Starbuck, though I'm not sure I've actually called her that.

These IKEA-hacks reminded me of a couple of my own 'hacks':

Two scratching-boards screwed into one end of my shelves:

And at the other end of the system I put up two loose shelves I just happened to have lying around (I made them earlier to hold grandma's speakers):

In case you were wondering what that black thingy on top was; it's a webcam:

Might as well post the picture of the cat-ramp connecting the bedroom window with the yard:

... And the flap in the insect netting:

Some real good advice in this thread. :)

I'll offer the need for play. Lone cats need some play time daily. A laser light is fun prey for them. So is a ball of tin foil getting rolled across the floor.
My cat loves this long feather/bell combo I picked up in Target. Wave it around and he'll attack and bat at it for hours.

If you have room I would suggest having 2 cats. It gives them somebody to play with and provides many entertaining interactions of their humans.

My cat hides as soon as she hears the carrier door being opened in another part of the house. She's currently going to the vet on a regular basis as she suffers from inflammation and stiffness in her back legs so she's in the carrier once a month or so, but she's always hated the carrier with a passion. Spending 8 hours in it in the "comfort" of an Air Canada cargo flight when we moved back to England six years ago probably didn't help to endear her to carriers any further.
I understand a lot better now :rommie: and I'm reminded o fthis strip:

I don't think any of the cats I've encountered (that like their carriers) have ever had to travel more than half an hours worth in them -and not always to the vet and of course they've lived in homes with kids and/or other animals (dogs); the carrier was their only totally private little den.

I found another one.

I don't like cats all that much, but I fully agree with the Nature's Miracle comments after dealing with my dogs.

Makes poop, puke, mud, etc. disappear and stop smelling immediately.

What I do about the carrier is, it sits out in the hall all the time, where the cats always see it and there's no warning. One is always open and ready for immediate loading of a cat. So all they know is that once in a while, when they are picked up, they might get dumped in a carrier. And mine are top-loading, so I let gravity work for me. There's no other warning. ;)
