Getting a cat. Need startup advice.

Absolutely. I think you need a cat to truly understand it. My cat always jumps on my lap when I'm watching TV, but is listening for the sound of the TV turning off the whole time. The second it does, she jumps up and asks me to feed her. While I appreciate the patience, there's always a nagging feeling that she was spending time with me so I would feed her
Be most careful at night as cats will ultimately try to steal your breath as you sleep. This phenomena has popularly been fictionalised by some authors such as Stephen King and Ray Bradbury, but l assure you it is anything but fantasy. My own cat Patches has attemped to siphon my very soul while l slumbered on numerous occasions, to the point where l must lock her away from my resting place, lest l give her away to the ASPCA, and thus into the hands of some other poor fool, who has nothing to lose but his own meager life.
I've heard of this behaviour before, but never encountered it; all cats that I've known love their carriers -to the extent that they use them for 'beds'.If you get a carrier...go for the top-loading kind, if possible. Let gravity work for you when you have to get a reluctant cat who's spreading their paws and claws to try to do the "I'm too big for this opening" act.
Really? I wish I had your problem.
My cat hides as soon as she hears the carrier door being opened in another part of the house. She's currently going to the vet on a regular basis as she suffers from inflammation and stiffness in her back legs so she's in the carrier once a month or so, but she's always hated the carrier with a passion. Spending 8 hours in it in the "comfort" of an Air Canada cargo flight when we moved back to England six years ago probably didn't help to endear her to carriers any further.

I don't think any of the cats I've encountered (that like their carriers) have ever had to travel more than half an hours worth in them -and not always to the vet and of course they've lived in homes with kids and/or other animals (dogs); the carrier was their only totally private little den.
I always loved Arlo & that cat. Like the time he wore the cat as a coonskin cap (and had to receive first aid from Janis), or "I didn't kick him, I pushed him with my foot".
My male cat hates the carrier because he associates it with trips to the vet. Just bringing it out causes him to pull a vanishing act.

My cat lives on my chest, which is inconvenient at times. Sometimes he moves down to my belly or legs, which is always a relief. When you pick a cat, try to pick one whose paws are comfortable on surfaces other than you. Also, the term "insanely affectionate" is exactly what it describes. Some cats are furry soul-sucking face-hugging alien parasites who use you as a head-butt tackling dummy and think they can get their head in your mouth if they just press cheek-to-cheek hard enough, long enough.
I wish! -my cat is the opposite: avoids people if she can; stays out if I'm having guests, and has in her two years of age (today (the eighth) is her birthday) not jumped into my lap -not even once‼
^Reminds me of the cat a friend had, it wouldn't talk to strangers -many people tried and failed -so I ignored it and 'played with' her other cat.
Then some day, months later, when I was at my friends place and we were watching TV, the don't touch me-cat jumped onto my lap and started purring...

I've got a standard litter box with a hood and a good scoop for my kitty. She eats both wet and dry food (Fancy Feast for the former, whatever's on sale for the latter and an occasional can of Blue Buffalo cat food) and the occasional treats. She lives in my bedroom because for the past five years, she's been angry that we got another dog after the previous dog died. She'll play with whatever is hanging on my bedroom door.

Do not assume closing a door will confine your cat. Ours can work the knob and open the door.

Just came back from the vet.
Füb's weight is normal (4.53 Kg), we need to brush the teeth a bit more often (I wonder if she'll ever take that easy so we can do it daily) and a RCP+FeLV-vaccination booster.

I have two cats. One is a all black cat, just a regular alley cat type. Got her when I was stationed in Germany back in '05 time frame. Her name is Shade but we call her Little Miss Kitty or LMK
Last November I got a Maine Coon kitten. He's almost a year old now (beginning on August) and he's a beast already. His name is Panzer or Panzer Krieg (his name of regisratation purposes).
Love them both!!!
We had another cat but we lost him to cancer back in September of last year. His name was Mycroft and he was a great cat. He was a little over 14 years old when we lost him. Miss him still everyday.
