GET SMART..sucked

I rented GET SMART on blu-ray last night and...well...it sucked. That might be to harsh, but the problem with the movie is that it took itself too seriously...and the humor just wasn't there. What is it about Terrence Stamp? Can that guy pick the right movie to be in or not???

Any way, the guy from the Office, Steve whatever his name is, wasn't bad in the role. The problem is his lack of any real energy. Don Adams just had that pent up energy and Steve "the office" guy is just..well...too boring in the role.

The movie has the feel of a Roger Moore 007 movie, and I mean one of the dumb ones. My kids were yawning 45 minutes into it, and they eventually went to bed. My wife and I barely limped across the finish line, it was that bad.

Oh well, we also rented Batman Begins on Blu-ray. We'll watch that tonight...but GET SMART and avoid...Get Smart...

My scale from 1-10....6. It had some good stuff, but only about half an hour of it...

Mildly watchable but unnecessary. What was the point of The Rock even being in the movie?

We do get Arkin and Carrell reunited from LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE to remind us of a better film.

Yep.
The GF NetFlixed it over the weekend and I can honestly say it didn't even make me chuckle.

I thought Get Smart was a great movie and very funny. Perhaps not a perfect adaption, but it had a good cast and Carrell was a perfect Max Smart.

I got THIS version of the DVD because I'm a big dork.

Have to agree with the OP. I too watched it last night and was terribly unimpressed. I may have chuckled once or twice, but it was definitely played too straight. It did not have the silly and ridiculous feel of the original Get Smart. Of course, remakes of TV shows are often done in a different vein, but this was not what I expected at all. I watched a few of the outtakes, but they were hardly any funnier and I gave up on trying to find them and just shit it off.

The whole Max as analyst finally getting his chance as a field agent and being introduced to 99 was a waste of time. The movie should have just started with the 86/99 pairing intact from the outset and the goal should have been to get in some laughs - not some inane "backstory."

Mel Brooks and Buck Henry were listed as consultants, or something like that. I wonder if anyone actually took any of their advice. I can't imagine they were too thrilled with the final product. Does anyone know what they thought of it?

I thought it was a watchable movie. Steve Carrell did the role great, but they did forget the funny. It should have been more like Pink Panther (the old ones) and less like a dumb James Bond.

The woman who played 99 was a terrible pick, I couldn't stand here at all.

I didn't even know who she was until my daughter told me she was in Princes Diarys; like that helped.

I agree, and now am wanting that version.

Sigh. Watching a rental at home isn't the same as with a packed house on a REAL movie screen in one uninterrupted sitting.

You actually thought the movie took itself seriously? How many times did you pause it, or leave it running while you hit the can or made food?

Alan Arkin was hysterical as the Chief and Carrell and Hathaway were great together. Perfect? No. But really, really funny. (See original thread)

I'm a die-hard fan of the original series, and I loved all the tips of the hat to it in this version. (And there were a BUNCH of them).

One of the best cinematic remakes of a classic series in the last five years. God knows there have been dozens of lame ones.

Movies are made to be seen on BIG screens in movie theaters where you MUST watch them in their entirety without interruption. That's how they're written and constructed. Especially comedies. It's like watching CE3K on a 14" Zenith and thinking "so what was the big deal?"

I was pleasantly surprised by Get Smart - I haven't been a fan of Steve Carrell's work in general, but I think he's a lot of fun in interviews, so I gave GS a chance - and laughed pretty much all the way through it. I don't think his Max took it any more seriously than Don Adams's interpretation - Max Smart has always been an American Clouseau, unaware how ludicrous both he and his situations are, and I thought that worked just fine in the movie (too bad Steve Martin couldn't remember that in the Pink Panther!). I may actually buy the DVD - and not just because I think Anne Hathaway is smokin' (which I emphatically DO! :D)

I think it's only available at/thorugh Best Buy.

It's pretty neat. The phone "folds up" the "wrong way" (instead of the phone closing on top of the dial like cell phones do it closes backwards the clasp that holds the DVD door shut is tough to open, but overall it's a neat toy (the dial even spins and clicks and the mouth piece opens up.) It's also considerably larger than an average man's shoe and a lot flatter. I would've "prefered" something closer to the "real thing" but overall its a neat little toy.

I'm thinking of putting it on display and getting a regular alpha case for the DVDs and printing off my own case cover.

Me too, but the wife would kill me. :p

I liked the movie way more than I thought I would or should.

Steve Martin as Clouseau wasn't as good as Steve Carell as Smart, but also bearable.

I skipped this one in the theater but finally got to see it on DVD last week, and found it to be a pretty okay film. It got one or two big laughs and a lot of chuckles, but I've definitely seen funnier films. I appreciated some of the nods to the original series, but it's been so long since I've seen it (mid-90s, Nick at Nite) that I'd need to brush up before I could really get them all.

It certainly rises near the top of the "classic TV remake genre," but when you consider said genre's other entries, that's not too hard to do.

Well, thanks for the advice. I guess I'll just never see this movie, then! :wtf:

Well I DID see it on the big screen with a packed house... and I pretty much thought it sucked too. There were a few good laughs (the dart gun in the airplane bathroom, some of the Rock scenes), but the whole thing just felt really flat to me. Combining a wacky comedy with a Bourne movie certainly SOUNDS like a cool idea, but it didn't work here at all.

Frankly I've been disappointed by all the big, talked about comedies this year. Get Smart, Tropic Thunder, and Zack and Miri each had their moments, but none of them really blew me away.

I like Steve Carrell, but I didn't like this movie. It just wasn't funny, I was really surprised. The only thing I remember laughing at was in the airplane bathroom. Oh, and the ending actually had some nice action. Aside from that, one big meh.
