GET SMART - Discussion and SPOILERS

One other thing about this movie that didn't paly quite right for me was the relationship between Max and Chief. In the original series, Max was much more of a pain in the ass for the Chief, and you could see the Chief being a lot more irritated with Max. With the movie, it was almost a more fatherly-son relationship. I'm not saying it didn't work, it was just a little different.

Well, as an analyst Max maybe worked out well for Chief. Maybe as an Agent Max gets more and more on the Chief's nerves. ;)

THE CONE OF SILENCE

I actually liked that they didn't play up the old Adams/Platt relationship. It wold have been derivative. The more fatherly place the Chief had in regard to Max was much more refreshing and led to a pleasing resolution toward the climax of the film.

"Unusual, but effective."

Since it's a spoilerized thread already I have to say:

"Holy shit, holy shit I can't believe I was almost run-through by a sword-fish!"

One or three words may be off, but if you saw the film, you get the point. :D

I think it was actually "Holy shit, holy shit, a swordfish almost went through my head!"

A good example of how Max always managed to irritate the Chief.

Ah the good old days. If I wasn't so damn broke right now, I go out buy the entire series with Time Life.

Nah, 'cause Smart actually throws a PHONE (corded) to no effect at one point.

Oh, seriously, I mean WHO THROWS A PHONE!

(There's a huge standee at the theater with a phone being thrown from it.) ;)

My friend actually ran into that, so I guess it does work on some level.

For me, the movie was a bit of a let down. My review is right here.

Fair enough review.

But, I still enjoyed the hell out of this movie and has inspired me to maybe invest in the original series on DVD. There were a lot of nice little nods to the original series, naturally, and I say again that Carell is perfectly cast as Smart. This movie could've been more, but that's what sequels are for. ;)

Anybody mind if I beat a dead horse? Okay, good. I finally got to see the film today and I was very impressed. I think Steve Carrell was absolutely perfect in the role of Maxwell Smart. I grew up watching the show on Nick at Nite and it holds a very special place in my TV-filled heart. Anyway, I was hoping that the writing would be a little bit more high brow, but we got the vomit scene, the rat on poop scene, the incredibly long pissing scene, and the male bare ass scene. I could have stayed at home and watched Jackass for that kind of stuff. ;)

Other than that, I really enjoyed the film and I will go see the inevitable sequel.

I loved it. (Thanks for bumping it. :D )
It was fun, even though I was worried through most of it that it would turn into something Disney, it managed to stay just left of that.
Plus, it's the first time my wife has said that we had to own a movie when we leave it.

I'm just so conflicted over this one. I liked the movie. I really did. I had a blast at it. But I used to watch the TV show all the time and I can tell you that this just was not Get Smart. I'm finding it hard to reconcile how fun the movie was with how unlike the source material that I love so much it is.

Oh, that would have been lovely! And quite possibly a welcome change in tone after shooting the intense TDK.

I saw it...it wasn't great but it was fun. Had a few good cameos, plus Larry Miller as "Underchief". Made for an OK Netflix rental.

I saw this movie a week or so ago and loved it. To be honest, I was a bit leery of how bad it might turn out. Especially the bit in the trailer where Max appears to be unsure of himself. The biggest surprise was how many of the best funny moments weren't in the trailer. Besides being funny, I was also a bit surprised how well the movie worked as an action flick in its own right.

Max, 99 and the Chief were all great. Hathaway seemed a bit young for the part, but I can suspend disbelief for their explanation. Plus, she was pretty hot. Steve Carrell seemed pretty faithful to the part without mimicking Don Adams. Though, his "missed it by that much" was kind of flat.
