This is actually the first I've seen this (though I've read about it a few times). When this came out were Trek fans offended? Or were they pretty chill about the sketch? It's only a little funny... I can see Shatner's frustration at being "forever Kirk" after a contract from his youth... but damn! :)

He apparently also wrote a book "Get A Life!"... may have to check that out.

I thought it was hilarious - and this even though I didn't always find SNL hilarious. (Still don't, actually.) Lots of people take things too seriously, and one of the things that some people take too seriously is Trek, and I don't see anything wrong with satirizing that.

I remember that episode. During Shatner's monologue, he made a remark that he hoped Star Trek fans had a good sense of humor. Unfortunately, many do not. However, I find that many of those who took offense were those who would fall into the category of those who need to - IMHO - get a life.

Actually, the sketch I found the funniest from that episode was Star Trek: The Restaurant Adventure, where the Enterprise was sold toe hte Marriott Corporation and turned into a theme restaurant.
And, yes, they had humpback whale on the menu!

It was quite funny and Shatner's delivery certainly helped to sell it. There where one or two obvious jokes in there "have you ever kissed a girl" for example but it was still amusing.

Yes, they were MIFFED all to hell. I remember when that aired, and he had a point (hell, it's still a valid point).

It's exactly what I want to say to those who get mired down in heated arguments over Star Trek minutia. But I hold back because that's a whole other can o' worms I don't want to open. ;)

There was a really hqarsh Shatner joke in a recent Family Guy where Peter asks Shatner "so in the episode where you drown your wife, why were you so fat?"

I have to admit I normally love jokes in bad taste but that one made me a teeny bit shocked.

I remember that joke. I think it was actually from the third or fourth episode. It bugged me when I first saw it too.

The people who were hip enough to enjoy SNL weren't the least bit offended. Good God, the setup alone cleared the way for Shatner's speech.

I also found it quite amusing...

Tho you guys bring up a good point, both given how he acted about ST11... and how he's probably made a lot of money...
