I dunno, I think I'd shove all the engineers on a starship and send them around the galaxy fixing all the shit the Enterprise or Voyager wrecked that week. Geordi would be captain though and Admiral Scotty is the chief back at starbase, O'Brien runs Team 1 with Nog and Muniz's ghost and Torres runs the Fighting Mongooses with Hogan's skeleton and Zombie-Carey. Trip is still dead due to These Are The Voyages but Holo-Trip is the interactive construct of the main computer. Alt-Scotty shows up every now and then drunk with Keenser.

You could make the 2 teams compete with eachother, something like Monster Garage, but in space!

O'Brien, purely because when I met Colm Meaney, he was so much more friendly than Burton.

Also, O'Brien's ability to problem solve on the fly is a major plus, as was his ground battle and leadership experience at the Setlik III massacre.

"Crewman Miles O'Brien became known as the "Hero of Setlik III" and was decorated after leading a group of two dozen men against a Cardassian regiment at the Barrica encampment. Among O'Brien's other achievements on Setlik III was saving the lives of thirteen men by using a field transporter for the first time." - Memory Alpha.

LaForge would've wet his pants.

Um, question is about Chief Engineer, not Tactical officer or ground combat leader.

I don't care if he would wet himself in a hand to hand combat situation, LaForge runs the most efficient engines in Starfleet - and that's what we're talking about here.

That's a tough call. I guess it depends what my mission is. Geordi is better at tricking out weird science, but Miles is probably better at getting conventional science working exceptionally well.

Geordi for the science mission, Miles for the combat mission.

Ditto. Well said and agreed.

I like TNG better but I have to say O'Brien. He got Shields up (if only partial) on Deep Space 9 (in Emissary) without much difficulty in minutes. Geordi takes hours to get shields up (In "Best Of Both Worlds, Part 2"). O'Brien is better at these things.

Well there is this exchange from "Second Sight"

O'BRIEN: All right, Lieutenant. I've got the warp drive on the Prometheus purring like a kitten. It'll do nine point six in a pinch but I wouldn't take it any faster.

DAX: I thought the theoretical maximum for those engines was warp nine point five?

Anyway the Ent-D was virtually brand new, so one could argue that the Ent-D engines were efficent because they were new.

I'm forced to go with O'Brien. Sure, the engineering is important what with keeping the lights on, rolling under doors, and holodecks causing havoc.

...but you've all missed a key point...

...every so often a situaiton is going to come up where someone is gonna get tortured and I want a guy I can rely on to get suckered into it. O'Brien FTW.

Yeah as much as I like Geordi I'll have to go for Miles for this same reason.

Depends on the mission. Geordi's both a theoretical physicist and an engineer, so I'd take Geordi along on a research mission. O'Brien is a brilliant engineer, and he has a fantastic feel for machinery. If he can make Cardassian and Federation equipment work together, who knows what else he could do?

i agree that it depends on the mission for exploration Geordi for combat O'Brien however for personality Torres

It's also possible O'Brien knew tricks that'd boost the Prometheus' warp drive DUE to working on the Enterprise under La Forge... the Nebula and Galaxy share warp design, so La Forge's improvements to the E-D (commented on by Leah Brahms) would probably work on the Prommie.

Weren't some of those improvements actually scheduled to be inclued in the next designs. From "Booby Trap" and "Galaxy's child"

O'Brien was basically the "chief engineer in all but name" for the Defiant, one of the most accomplished war vessels, as station "chief engineer in all but name" he had to keep a gigantic space station based on alien technology (where there's few tech manuals on hand I would imagine) on the go as well as to help repair ships docked at the station. LaForge is very good n' all, but he really has a very easy time of it compared to O'Brien.

I always thought of Miles as more of a technician than an engineer. Operations on a starbase are probably a lot different than a starship with warp drive. On a ship, I would prefer Geordi.
