I also like the idea of Captain LaForge. It's all about growth and Geordi hasn't received a lot of it, esp. during the TNG movies.
But why is becoming a captain the only way to grow? How about getting Geordi into a committed relationship, say, or facing some kind of family crisis, or any of a dozen other things? Since when was getting promoted a substitute for character development? Heck, the TOS movie characters got promoted to a ridiculous degree and were still frozen in their exact same roles and personalities.
Keep in mind, for one thing, that there are a number of new cast members being added, not just in
Resistance but in
Q & A next month as well. Character growth can come from developing new relationships and rapports with new crewmates. And I think you'll be satisfied with the attention paid to Geordi there, as well as to the entire cast, old and new.
Besides, promoting Geordi to a command post on another ship would mean writing him out of the series, and I'm not sure the book line can sustain yet another new 24th-century starship title. So it'd pretty much mean that Geordi would be gone and wouldn't get
any further character development. So it seems kind of self-defeating.
