Generic space opera

That was the aborrations of one sleazy guy, not a function of the universe itself. It was smart and positive if a little misguided but the subject matter (source material) was obviously unique. This is sort of like living in the years after Beethoven lived and wondering if there's any music left to write that doesn't sound like Beethoven? Did people right after his time say there's nothing left to say musically because he said it all. Then came the romantics and redefined things yet again with originality.

Who else does space exploration? Not Star Wars, their entire galaxy is completely explored, there are no surpises in Firefly, admittedly they're in a single star system, but no one is looking around much. Farscape all they do is run. BSG there was a small amount of discovery along the way, but again runnig, not exploration was the main thing.

Maybe Star Trek did have the market cornered there, certainly as a primary goal.

:)

.

Crusade did that with the "alien plague" that would take one standard 5 year series to wipe out all life on earth :). It wasn't until Enterprise when they did it again with the "Alien Threat" that upped the ante and 'said' they could do it in one!

But you could say the one thing Trek doesn't have is what all the other shows do have and that is small fighters to attack bigger ships. For example, it Star Wars, a small craft can make a difference against a big one but not in Trek. Even in SG-1 a small craft can take out a bigger one.

Crusade was excruciating. It was like being an orange and squeezed into orange juice it was so one note. The techno mage along for the ride was just gratuitous. It was an optomistic universe but it was boring and depressing. The plague should have been for another race to not be so self serving.

There will probably be a HBO space exploration show out soon.

They've done adult versions of westerns, fantasy, history, drama, now we wait for their space show with swearing and violence.

It has been discussed over and over on this board in several threads that small ships were not meant to fight larger ships because they simply do not have the power to do so. A one man fighter works in nBSG, SG1, SGA, Crusade, Babylon5, Star Wars to name a few.

But you could say the one thing Trek doesn't have is what all the other shows do have and that is small fighters to attack bigger ships.

They had those in Ds9.

You resurrected a 3 year old thread just to say that? :shifty:

Generally, if a thread's over 6 months old, just start a new thread.

Tim, are you aware that the Moderators here frown on resurrecting long dead/inert threads?

Please do not resurrect threads that are long dead. The OP hasn't posted here in over a year.

If you have a topic you'd like to discuss, feel free to start a new thread.

Thanks.
