Generations plot hole

The whole "only ship in range" is just another plot device meant to impress upon you the "we cannot fail" dramatic element.

It has been used more times than I can recall.

actually that is why Kirk went to Admiral Nogora in motion picture and got the Enterprise back. He saw the bullshit of the burecrats and wanted no part of it from the V'Vger emergency.

He told them you can't send all the ships out from Earth. And they didn't listen to him. And neither let a ship be half dismantled to boot. Enterprise should never have gone there in the first place.

I think it would have been great, and added an extra dimension to the plot if Picard had tried these things and failed, and thus been forced to the course of action taken in the film.

And if he did go back and try to arrest Soran, there wouldn't really be evidence he was up to something.

Why would he have to arrest him? Simply detain him until the Nexus has passed, and he's no trouble anymore...

The thing that always got to me was the missle.

Assuming something that small can destroy a star without being destroyed itself, it takes off like a bottle rocket and reaches the sun in, what, 8 seconds?

Who says it didn't have a second, warp capable, stage?

Why would the rocket not have warp drive? Basically all other projectiles in Trek have that. And many are actually smaller than that rocket.

The aphysical thing is how the darkness reaches the planet so quickly. But again, I don't think it too unbelievable that the two old geezers would spend the five minutes just catching their breaths and quietly sending deadly looks at each other. Neither has much of a reason to do anything else, after all.

See, I can explain that one too! The explosion of the trilithium bomb reacted oddly with the warp-core in the missile creating a subspace compression wave that actualy managed to accelerate the light of the star past relativistic speeds so that the sun appeared to go out right away!

Simple.

:)

Like a storm or sudden seaquake accelerating the already moving waves of the ocean, its moving at its constant speed, something "booms" and creates an accelerant, in this case a gaseous/nuclear reaction that burst the Photon concentration leaving the star to superluminal speeds clearing the system in moments.

Everyone always cites that as a problem, even though the solution that Picard and Soran yelling at each other for eight minutes was edited out is fairly obvious.

The real problem is that when the Amagosa star explodes, the ship first notices it right when the star dims through Picard's window. Unless the ship was right on top of the star (which it wasn't), the subspace sensors should've noticed the star was behaving oddly minutes before the light from the event reached the ship.
