Generations: Kirk's first death question

Penman

Ensign
Newbie
When Kirk "dies" on the Enterprise B, and Scotty et al. go to look at the hull gash. They look right out into space.

The question: How are they breathing?

Force fields to seal the hull breach. You can see a shimmer at the edges of the tear in the Enterprise's hull.

Thanks, Allyn. I was looking for something like that, but even on Blu-Ray and 10-foot screen, I missed it. :)

Forcefields that remain invisible unless you touch them. Picard showed Lily such a forcefield in the next film First Contact. Similarly, a forcefield prevented most of the bridge crew from being blown out into space in Nemesis.

Edit: Allyn Gibson is a ninja poster!

^What they said. There were force fields in place, so when Scotty and Chekov went down there, there was atmosphere.

Trek Tech for the win!

(To be honest I had had a similar thought back when I first watched the film because I arrived late to the theatre and missed his first death and the forcefield reference).

Funny, though, how only those rooms that existed in set form were seen lit in that scene, whereas all the adjoining rooms were dark and seemingly empty. ;)

That's a really pretty scene, even if it forces us techheads to do fancy handstands trying to justify Demora's statement that the gash covers decks 13 through 15. If decks of such low numbers are located that far down, then the ship can't be more than perhaps 20 decks high; supposedly Kirk's old ship was taller than that. Yet comparison pictures of the two ship types suggest the opposite size ratio...

Maybe they started labelling the decks differently. Or that robot who badly labelled the turboshaft in TFF was made into a computer on the B.

...eheh.
