Generational preferences

The main reason we might see generational trends is because they strongly correlate with which series we saw first and therefore most likely to have made the biggest impression. That said, there's obviously a great deal of variation due to individual tastes, and that's reflected here.

I watched TOS reruns as a kid, so that made the deepest, most emotional connection for me, but in terms of overall quality and which series I'm most impressed with watching again, that's easily DS9.
Now there's an interesting question for another thread: Is your first Trek your favorite Trek?

I know this is true for me. I have such an emotional attachment to the TOS crew that I can't bring myself to say I like DS9 more because....I mean, it's Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura, Scotty, Chekov, and Sulu! And Rand! How could I love a Trek more that didn't have that group? It's like saying I love my cool new friends more than my family.

But if I'm really honest with myself, DS9 is better. Like, way better than any other Trek series. It's amazing.

Born in the TOS Movie era, grew up watching TNG and then DS9.
My favourite show is DS9 although growing up it was TNG. I like TOS and the movies both old and new, and have little time for VOY and ENT.

I was born in 1972 and my earliest Trek memories are of TOS reruns. That said, while I enjoyed the TNG episodes I managed to catch, I was never obsessed with catching an episode. That happened first with Babylon 5 and soon after with DS9. I usually prefer serial shows with real character development to episodic ones, and DS9 is the most serial of them, so far at least.

Alright not a huge sample size but I think we are seeing a bit of a trend with older viewers preferring TOS and younger viewers preferring the newer shows.

I agree that it would be interesting to see if people's first series is their favourite. That's not the case for me. TNG was the first Star Trek I saw but DS9 is by far my favourite.

I grew up during the TOS rerun era, but if I have to rate the series (based on overall qulaity)

1.>DSN
2.>TOS
3.>TNG
4.>ENT
=.>VOY

DSN only comes out on top due to the poor quality of S3 of TOS

Born in 1984, so technically between TOS and TNG, but much closer to TNG. I like TNG better as a show mostly because that's what I grew up with and can sit down and watch just about any episode at any time, even season 1 and 2. But I actually enjoy the TOS characters more, so I guess to me it's kind of a tie between TNG and TOS. I'd actually throw the TOS movies in between TNG and TOS if I were to make a comprehensive ranking.

I didn't like DS9 when it first aired and considered myself a 'Voyager guy'. But due to TNN/Spike running 219 episodes of DS9 a day back in the early and mid 2000s, I got a second change at DS9 and totally got hooked. Now I consider DS9 my 3rd favorite, followed by VOY. Although Captain Janeway is one of my favorite character of all Trek, so it's hard to rank.

I didn't like ENT at all when it first aired. But I got brought back in when I heard what they were doing with season 4. I've since gone back and given ENT a 2nd and 3rd try, and while I do still think of it as my least favorite, I do have an appreciation for what they were trying to do.

I was born in '84 between ST and TNG. I remember watching TNG with my mother. However, it was an old VHS with episodes of ST that got me hooked.

"Those uniforms are cool."
"Why doesn't Scotty have a mustache?"

I remember crying becasue I though Kirk was going to die on the Constellation in "The Doomsday Machine."

ST is my favorite.
Second is TNG.

I watched Voyager as it aired. That was the Star Trek that we gathered around as a family and watched. I didn't watch DSN until a few years ago. The non-Starfleet aesthetic was what threw me off. But it was actually way better than I thought it would be.

So that brings in VOY as third,
and DSN as fourth.

I don't know what the hell everyone is talking about with ENT, as there are only four Star Trek series, not counting TAS.

I grew watching TOS repeats on BBC but its not my favourite, however of all the Trek shows that I sit watch it comes on TV, TOS, ENT and DS9 are the only ones that grab my attention. I have all the ENT dvds so that says something! lol

I was born between TOS and TNG... think I was 16 when TNG premiered. I can't really say what my favorite series is since I haven't seen any except TOS in their entirety (and that one so long ago I don't recall certain eps), but I'll say TOS for now, at least until I finish Voyager, which I'm working through now.

Born in 1961 so long before TOS. Loved scifi in all media types, but got hooked on TOS when the BBC finally got around to showing it in the mid 70's. Read all the James Blish tie ins, the original SFC and a few "Making of" books too. Loved the Movies and in the 80's got into Pocket Books and the FASA STRPG (which I still play). Enjoyed TNG until the arrogance and sense of superiority turned me off (not to mention the technobabble!). Tried DS9 & VOY but didn't get hooked. Tried ENT but it was too 24thC- alike for me. I was expecting rugged early explorers but just got MORE technobabble!
First Trek was, is and always will be my favourite!!!

Gonna go ahead and re-rank the series, if that's okay. Last night I watched Favor the Bold and Sacrifice of Angels so I no longer feel the need to hem and haw about the DS9 vs TOS thing.

1. DS9 (by a long shot, not even a contest, are there even any Treks other than this???)
2. TOS
3. TNG
4. ENT (still good though!)
5. TAS
6. VOY (still haven't seen it)
