why is it that Kirk has his insignia near his waist sometimes and on his chest other times. Just wondering

The captain had two different types of tunic, the standard pullover and the wraparound with the insignia near the waist. In fact, they were both the same avocado-green color, but the green velour used for the standard uniforms in the first two seasons showed up as gold on camera. In the third season, they switched to a different fabric and actually did color it gold to match the look.

I don't think we ever saw anyone other than Kirk in a wraparound "captain's tunic."

Am I wrong, or were there actually TWO different versions of the green shirt with the delta on the waist?

I didn't recall any version of the "Captain's shirt" having a black collar. Did an internet search. Found only one picture.

Variations on a Theme

#1- "The Enemy Within" Rank is on the shoulders (two long braids with a short one in between) instead of the cuffs. Also, someone has stolen Uhura's chair.

#2- "The Apple" Black-and-gold piping/trim around the collar; rank is back on the cuffs. Kirk was having a 'good hair day'.

#3- "The Doomsday Machine" No black trim around collar. Rank is on cuffs.

Charlie Evans was given a tan suede version with no rank stripes (but an Enterprise insignia) that he wore with a white crewneck shirt in Charlie X.

The alternate uniform styles started back in "The Enemy Within" when it was felt that the audience needed help in distinguishing the difference between the good and evil Kirks.
