General Trek Questions and Observations

So we know that at a certain point the Federation gets time travel technology. We know they'll travel to the past under certain guidelines (temporal accords, temporal prime directive, and the like).

But what about travel to the future? Is that ruled out by these guidelines? Or can Braxton (29th century) fire up his ship to have a chat with Daniels (31st century)?

Weren't there explicit guidelines for sf officers who wound up in the future accidentally that they shouldn't learn about it because it might lead them to change it? Seems like that would automatically rule out any deliberate mission to the future.

Hm. Interesting. In which episode does it say so?

I can only recall Voy: Relativity for now, where Ducane sees no reason to 'resequence' Janeway's and Seven's memory engrams as they made no trips to their foreseeable future.

Also, perhaps that no longer holds for people who do possess time travel technology, much like the Prime Directive need not be applied to citizens of warp capable societies.

Just remember one thing. The Terran Empire successfully conquered the Early United Federation of Planets, by about 2163...

Alex Kurtzman says: "Star Trek is dying".

In an interview with TrekCulture, Section 31 actor "Robert Kazinsky" (Mecha Boom-Boom) said that Alex Kurtzman told him that "Star Trek is dying".

Alex Kurtzman has been involved with Star Trek since the development of Star Trek 2009 and is in charge of Star Trek since 2018.
This means if Star Trek is dying, it's his fault. It is happening under his leadership. He had over 16 years to revive Star Trek.

At this point rebooting TOS as a continuation of SNW might be the better option.

Oh, and longer seasons.

Agreed, with the provision of much better scripts.

Once upon a time scripts could be mediocre, but well thought out and refined scripts are a must.

Take a look at the great Robert A. Heinlein. Most of his books and short stories are poorly edited - best.

Or take a look at something far more modern...
'Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens'... Not very good writing. This is compared to 'Rouge One: A Star Wars Story'.

Or compare 'Andor' with 'Star Trek: Discovery '

THEY DON'T CARE.

Special effects don't make a movie or TV show. But intelligent writing will.

And it still gets down to bread and circuses (not the episode).

"...this film, and I'm sorry to say it, it wasn't made for people that love Star Trek..." (and goes on to say about how it was designed to be something that makes fresh eyes want to seek out previous Trek.) -- Rob Kazinsky.

I am of the opinion that you can make Trek to bring in new fans without disappointing long-time fans, and without producing an insanely generic romp that is quickly discarded by many fans and completely ignored by the majority of non-fans. (I also loathe the "wasn't made for you" defense for bad reviews.)

This is not an attack on the actor, just the notion.

Star+Trek+The+Original+Series+Set+Tour+corridor.jpg

Does anyone think the corridors on the original Enterprise could count as a “liminal space”?
There are a couple of definitions of "liminal space".

Most corrridors could be considered transitionary spaces - it's rather their function!

If the consideration is aesthetics then the answer's a bit yes-and-no. Here it is an empty space but, as was particularly drawn to our attention in "Trials and Tribbulations" those spaces do get very crowded. There's the other point that liminal space as aesthetic is a deliberate design choice and I don't feel that it is one well suited to functional vessels.

Edit for spelling

And the corridors provide most of the air circulation. And ate airtight in the event of a breach. This is one of the points that I liked about 'Star Trek: Discovery; som body was taking the logic of 'Star Trek: Generations ' too its end.

Just keep in mind when the author Larry Niven figured out back the 1960s... you don't want to rely upon power supplies for force fields..., but the hull.

I know it’s not an exactly your thing, but… context?

They always ships with one primarily species aboard it in terms of a Starfleet joint. Like the whole 'only Vulcan crew' and the like. I wonder if you could request a posting to be the only one of your kind aboard that kind of thing and how that'd influence Xenobiologists and the like. Then again, stuck on a ship with Bolians seems like a nightmare.
