General Trek Questions and Observations

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I've been wondering for ages... How exactly do the universal translators work and where exatly are they? In "Little Green Men", we learn that Ferengi have it implanted in their ears. (Because of course they would.) Is that the case with everyone? If so, how come that they often make first contact on a planet, where people don't have a UI, and still they understand each other?
I thought in the TNG era shows that the universal translators were in the com-badges.

I rewatched "Business as Usual" from DS9 yesterday and there's something I still don't understand: Gaila and Hagath recruit Quark for selling weapons and promise him to share the profit with him. But why do they even need Quark for this, why don't they sell the weapons directly to the customers?

I guess it's actually a simple question and I think there was just some detail I didn't get. Probably because I watched the episode in the original engish audio and I'm no native speaker. But, on a side note, it was totally worth it, the "You better hope there isn't a next time"- monologue of Sisko is so damn brilliant in the original, much better actually than in the german version :techman:.

for the same reason the business suits at Chrysler don't sell the cars. Quark is, as he has said, a "people person" and he is a salesman..his job was convincing people that new high tech weapons were better than what they were using

In the U.S. at least, states have laws that prevent car companies from selling straight to the public without going through dealerships.

I think the simplest explanation for why they needed Quark was that his bar was a perfect place to host their customers on DS9. Plus they were able to use the holosuites to set up virtual demos so the customers could test out different weapons without risk.

Yes. plus.. Quark is good at dealing with people, giving them the sales pitch

So, I'm thinking that throughout TNG, I think each of the 7 main characters has commanded the ship at least once. Are they the only show to do that?

Picard: Routinely
Riker: Best of Both Worlds (among others)
Laforge: Arsenal of Freedom
Troi: Disaster
Crusher: Descent
Data: Gambit
Worf: The Emmissary (Albeit nonofficial) He did also assume command in Conundrum for a bit too lol

You're right, I think Bones, Uhura, Chekov, Miles, Odo, Quark, Tom, B'Elanna, Phlox and Travis never commanded the ship/station.

I think Ezri never had command either.

Also, was there an episode of VOY where they left Neelix in charge? *shudder*

Speaking of command. I caught the first 30 minutes or so of TMP this afternoon. Why did Kirk take a temporary reduction in rank to Captain (and Decker to Commander) to assume command.

Shouldn't they have both retained their current rank, like Kirk/Spock did in WoK when Starfleet activated the Enterprise?

Because rewriting the script to the pilot episode of Phase II was difficult before they had word processors with a "find/replace" function? :nyah:

I mean in a DS9 episode it's said that whoever is in command of a starship is adrerssed as "Captain", regardless of rank. Sp maybe it was just that? And Decker was referred to as Commander because he was temporarily the first officer and it would be confusing to have two people referred to as "captain"?

The real-world reasons for putting her in skin-tight bodysuits aside...would it have been, theoretically, possible for Janeway to give Seven of Nine a field commission onboard Voyager as crewman or ensign or whatever and put her into a Starfleet uniform?

Similar to what she did with Tom Paris and an entire crew of Maquis terrorists? Yep, entirely within her powers.

I found one for this thread, which is a little too old to bump...from Green Lantern #77 (June 1970), the second installment in the Green Lantern/Green Arrow run:
