General thoughts on ENT?

Enterprise is a show I've never seen. I do plan to hopefully watch it all this fall before Discovery begins. From what I've witnessed among Trek fans, ENT seems to be the forgotten series; often not mentioned, and when it is, not fondly. If Discovery is a success, it might be known as the prequel Trek fans wanted, pushing ENT even more to the wayside.

I'm simply asking for your general thoughts on the show, and your opinion of its main strengths and weaknesses. Do you feel audiences were unfair on the show at the time, was it cancelled unjustly, and do you look back on it with more fondness now that when it was originally on the air?

Seasons 1 and 2 will be tougher to get through.

Season 1 meanders a lot with writing, general direction and characterisation.

Season 2 has the weakest plotlines of the series and has to be endured to do a full watchthough.

Season 3 improves everything to a degree, but only if you really get behind the Xindi arc.

Season 4 has a very weak opening and panders a lot to canon, but has some good arcs.

Overall it's a very mixed series with some weak characters and silly plots. It can feel too much like Voyager and TNG at times, but it can grow on you.

I was hoping for thoughts on the show from Trek fans in general, not necessarily and only huge fans of the show as are likely to be found on the Enterprise forum. But hey, you're the boss.

First of all, the parameters of the General Trek Forum, listed at the top of the page, state:

"Trek TV and cinema subjects not related to any specific series or movie." This is clearly about a specific series.

Second, anyone who goes into GTD will find a link to this thread which I have left there. If they're interested, they're one click away.

Third, I guarantee you this forum is not just "huge fans".

Lastly, if you have a problem with a moderator action, use the PM function instead of commenting in the thread.

Thank you.

Yeah. Anyway guys, carry on. Enterprise! General thoughts? I'm looking forward to Jeffrey Combs' performance, big fan as you can tell from the avatar.

Edit: avatar since changed. It was Weyoun.

I found seasons one and two mostly boring with a few gems, thought season three was awesome and four was pretty good.

I think if the series began with the direction and energy of the third season, it would have lasted another season at least.

I liked Broken Bow because of the cool aliens. But the other episodes of season 1 were disappointing , season 2 was just awful. The xindy arc and season 4 were good though. As much as it deserved to be cancelled after season 2 , I believe that after season 4 it had earned at least one season reprieve. Too bad it didn't get the ratings that were needed for that.

There's about a season and a half to two seasons of good stuff in there if you cherry pick the hell out of it. The problem is, you sort of have to watch the whole thing before you know what to cherry pick the next time around.

The 1st 2 seasons are rough. Particularly the 1st. The 3rd and 4th seasons are excellent. I think ENT would have been remembered as a very good series had it run 7 Seasons.

At one time ENT was my favorite Trek show, particularly the last two seasons, but on the whole, I find that DS9 has more staying power. That said, the Xindi arc is pretty crucial, if you like it, you'll enjoy the latter seasons, if you don't, they'll be a bit meh to say the least. I really like Archer's personal journey from an eager, almost boy scoutish explorer to a seasoned warrior who's almost disillusioned following far too many disagreeable command decisions.
Overall I'd say that Broken Bow is my favorite pilot, but These are the Voyages... is so horrible that I don't really even count it as a finale, Demons/Terra Prime tells a much more interesting story, IMO. TATV makes the whole show seem like a TNG-era holonovel.

Enterprise became, and remains my #2 series, slightly behind TNG. The evolution of the characters through the four seasons is extremely interesting, especially the Human/Vulcan relationships. A lot of people heap complaints on the show because "it wasn't what they wanted to see." I came to it with an open mind and enjoyed it continuously.

Enterprise was often boring but individual episodes and moments could be good. I thought Season 1 was pretty lacklusters, nothing to recommend. From Season 2 I've seen Minefield, Deadstop, Future Tense, Regeneration and The Expanse and thought they were good. Season 3 with the Xindi was hit and miss and I thought wasted too much time on boring stuff like cowboy planet, caveman planet, Detroit but had a bunch of good episodes towards the end including my favourite of the whole series Damage. Season 4 I have not seen all of but felt hit and miss too, but the Vulcan Arc, Klingon Arc and Mirror Universe arc were all pretty cool. I think it's probably one of the best looking series and liked seeing more location shooting or even just use of the backlot, I was so fucking sick of DS9's bullshit cave set. I think the CGI and makeup looked great and I like the action scenes late in the series with the MACOs, like one where Talas and some MACO just kick the shit out of each other.

Ok my thoughts might not be worth much as I had always enjoy enterprise and was not a part of the group that really disliked it, but, I am rewatching the show recently and are about 1/3 of the way in s2 but the show was not quite as bad as I remembered it at times. S1 struggled as they did a poor job at assembling the writing team and they had a network that did not know the show and meddled which made things worse.

Yet watching a cast reunion extra on the blu-ray set the producer has actually stated that many people have come back to this show or have come late and just started watching and that it's getting a better reception now amongst the masses than it did when it was on the air.

ENT has some OK episodes, and maybe one or two decent ones, but overall I'm not fond of it. It's my least favorite series, counting TAS. My biggest complaint is that ENT's style is too typical of the so-called Berman era, especially right out of the gate. Close second is that it plays connect-the-dots with preexisting canon. Both of those complaints can be summed up as "too much more of the same," for my taste.
