General "Likes" and "Dislikes" Regarding Kelvinverse

^StarTrek suffers from small universe syndrome, Janeway should have taken 7 days to get to Earth instead of 7 years...

Unfortunately. That's why I would have liked the new films to start putting some order into this. Since Star Trek tried to create a universe with a certain degree of complexity, they could have tried to respect more these rules. In other fantasy universes such as Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones, there is an acceptable relationship between time / distance of travel that is fairly respected throughout the plot (in GOT, only books, since the TV series gave Varys and Littlefinger teleporters).

The main plots of ST09 & STID & STB - male seeks revenge again, and again and again to destroy the Federation. OOOKKKKK

So, if women are the ones who seek revenge (let's say, a Beatrix Kiddo-type) everything would be okay? XD Still, I do agree the villains of the movies seem to be only motivated by revenge.

I could not care less if they use a male, female or a sentient racoon every time but please X seeking revenge, I, II and III was getting on my nerves

Khan Noonien Singh ... and wanted to exterminate all non-genetically-enhanced inferiors
Where does this last come from?
It was obvious.
If it's obvious then you should be able to point to a quote from Space Seed or TWOK.
And you'll notice that when Spock accuses Khan of genocide, Khan doesn't deny it...
The only time Spock directly speaks to Khan is in the after dinner scene in Space Seed. Spock throws terms like tyranny and petty dictatorships at Khan to get a reaction out of him.

When does Spock accuses Khan of genocide? Because it isn't in the only scene in which Spock ever speaks to Khan.

Khan doesn't affirm it either. Writers leaving themselves wiggle room, I'd wager.

I really like the cast. I like the way they interpret the characters and I like them as people. I also like the fact that they have already established careers and won't be typecast by this.
I like the new timeline. Anything can happen. New adventures, new takes on old adventures...
I like the character arcs. The way Kirk grows and the evolving friendships between the big three.
I LIKED seeing Leonard Nimoy as Spock again.
The new aliens...
The special effects. The wonder...

I didn't like the over the top never-ending action sequences but that is a complaint I have about other action adventure movies. King Kong, Transformers, ITD, Beyond and countless do this. There is a great dramatic explosive scene and we all calm down only for them to build up and have ANOTHER great dramatic explosive climax. Stop that.
While I liked the new aliens I agree we could have seen some familiar faces in the crowd.
Seeking revenge...I agree. Getting old.

^ Khan predates the divergence, so there is no "alternate Khan".

And no, I don't give 50 shades of shit what Simon Pegg said.

I really respected how with '09, Abrams' and co had a lot of boxes to tick in terms of pleasing hardcore to passive fans from however many generations there had been over the previous 40+ years, and still produce something that would appeal to a general mainstream audience, and although you can't please everyone, they pretty much suceeded on every count.

And then I hated them for Into Darkness. Whitewashing Khan so they could transcend levels of homage, plagiarism, to outright ridicule..... I thought the whole point of a new verse was to tell new stories?

Not when TWOK is the "best Star Trek film ever" and Khan is the "Greatest Star Trek Villain ever!!!!"

You can't get past it. Every second film in each series has been a TWOK rehash of some shape, matter or form.

They're fun.
Good acting for many of them throughout, and Kirk in Beyond
Brought Trek back in some form

Dislikes

They're all flawed; the first one rushes things too much, the second is a rehash, the third has an incredibly uncompelling villain
Pine/Kirk is hard to believe, especially as a captain, in the first two films
Trek is better on TV
Would rather have seen a new crew than a rehash of the first one

Overall, all three films are ok - worth watching, but not among the best (or the worst)

Entertaining movies. I enjoyed them for what they were
I like Chris Pine

I don't care for reinventing universes. To me these Trek movies are not true Trek. More like alternate reality versions of the real thing
I can't buy Quinto as Spock. I keep expecting him to start sawing off heads and stealing powers

I thought it would be interesting to see what the "likes" and "dislikes" are, IN GENERAL, regarding the three Kelvinverse films. I know, on the whole, I accept and very much enjoy them...so there's a lot to like. But, there's also things that frustrate me or don't resonate. I thought it would be interesting to capture those and see the differences in people's thoughts.

Let's try to do ourselves a favor and avoid being "really funny" by saying stuff like "I don't like any of it and I hate all of it."

LIKE:
1. TOS-focus (using new versions of the original characters- and not trying to be Star Trek The NEXT Next Generation)
2. Adventure and action oriented stories- love that they've gotten away from ponderous, preachy dialogue and dismal soul-sucking debate/banter
3. Fun, thrilling structure
4. The cast...they are all brilliant. Even the "guest players" are all very good (Greenwood, Cumby, etc)
5. The music is awesome. Not Jerry Goldsmith circa TMP / TFF awesome, but pretty damned good.
6. Good emotional punch. I've gotten misty-eyed in each movie. There were TOS movies that I love that didn't get me misty-eyed. Again, I think this is largely due to the cast's performances.
7. Well-placed and well-timed humor
8. Simple adventure stories...not trying to be "Game of Thrones" in space where everyone cares about the political climate and how the Tholians and the Calamarain are going to respond to the destruction of Romulus and crap like that.

DISLIKE:
1. The production design is, almost completely, a source of irritation. I don't like the props, ships, sets, etc. at all.
2. Over-done action. Sometimes, I get dizzy and find myself with a headache watching the massive amount of punching, jumping, punching, shouting, punching, shooting, punching and falling that goes on. Oh, and they punch a lot.
3. Under-utilizing the Kirk-Spock-Bones dynamic (although Beyond did a much better job here)
4. Transwarp Beaming (again, thank you Beyond for sending this in the same scrap heap that Nemesis sent the emotion chip into)
5. Caricature NuKirk. I love Chris Pine and I love the evolution of the Kirk character in these movies...but I hate the "Kirk is a total reckless cowboy" and "Kirk is a manwhore" stuff being over-done. Again, thank you Beyond for largely getting rid of this and letting Kirk just be Kirk.
6. Over-Emotional NuSpock. I'd need another hour to write on this one. I love Quinto, and I like his portrayal during "normal" times...but then there's the other stuff that seems a bit over-the-top (and yes, I know that Spock when he was younger on TOS was portrayed as being less emotionally controlled...but he was never screaming, crying, and beating people to death regularly with his bare hands).
7. The phasers are these little pop guns. There's no more beam weapons. Fanboy boo-hoo.

Interesting analysis here...I'd say that Beyond was the film most devoid of the things that have frustrated me.

What say you?
I dig the music, the costumes, and the cast. That's it. The scripts are clunky, unfocused, and too long. The action scenes are too choppy and over the top and I don't find them exciting at all. Sometimes less is more. I did enjoy the Khan movie in the theaters but I couldn't sit through a DVD rewatch.

Likes:
  • The cast. Karl Urban's McCoy is wonderfully spot on.
  • The visual effects are, on the whole, good.
  • Interesting ship designs and aliens.
  • Enjoyable musical scoring.
Dislikes:
  • Weak scripts with plot holes big enough to fly the Vengeance through. Sideways.
  • Over the top, arcade game action sequences to distract one's attention from the weak story.
  • Transwarp transporters, magic blood, and other deus ex machina tomfoolery when the writers paint themselves into a corner.
  • Cumber-Khan the Head Squisher. I love Ben as Sherlock and in other roles, but this didn't work at all.
  • Not being able to remember the villain in Beyond because he was that forgettable.
  • That shredding the Enterprise appears to be a standard plot point now.
  • Using blaring music to blow up the bad guys at the end of Beyond. Seriously, that's how Attack of the Killer Tomatoes ended. That alone made me happy I didn't see the film at the cinema.
  • The ubiquitous ridiculous lens flares.
  • Kirk's utterly nonsensical Starfleet career.
Those are the main ones.
