Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

I remember earlier in the season a lot of people complained she was "too much" this season and stuck out like a sore thumb. I wonder if when there was a showrunner change Kurtzman felt this too, and dialed her way back.
If that's the case then all it accomplished was to highlight why exactly many viewers found her too much. It's like your complaints about your dish having too much salt being answered by replacing your entire meal with a salt shaker. As I said, I don't have problems with her awkwardness itself, but its entertainment value wears itself wafer-thin at warp speed if there's nothing else her character can offer. A waste of both a good character and a great performer, really.

Yeah. I mean, I really kinda disliked last season when it seemed like they were coming up with dumb excuses to keep Tilly prominent in the show once they abandoned the "lower decks" premise and we didn't get many scenes with Tilly and Burnham hanging out in their room together. Things like "Captain Killy" and her suddenly becoming Stamets's only assistant (despite what was shown earlier in the season). But it seems like without coming up with some excuse to include Tilly, the writers just cannot figure out any way to integrate her into the current season arc, so she barely gets more lines than the bridge furniture.

I remember those discussions from last year and how vigorously I've defended her... what I find different now is while I was able to explain or at least rationalize most of the concerns raised about her then, there's been simply nothing to defend in the last few episodes, except for her scenes with Airiam of course. At least the main problem about her during Season 1 was the perception that she was far too often involved in plotlines which didn't quite require her specific expertise, which could be argued for or against.

But you're right, the second half of this season really showcased she's basically a one-trick pony based on the spore drive and awkwardness-related comic relief. When was the last time she's done anything related to the command training program, for example? It could be the perfect catalyst for character development if she was to realize that she's better as a scientist than as a commander and that she shouldn't push herself into a role she's unsuited for just to fulfill the internalized expectations of her mother.

At least the bridge furniture gets cool lines like "beep beep boop boop" uninterrupted.
To be fair, Saru didn't even bother to interrupt her this week and just went back to what he was talking about. The comedic timing reminded me a bit of the 'Broccoli' scene from Hollow Pursuits when Data caught himself with his foot in his mouth mid-explanation and just very theatrically turned back to his workstation as if nothing happened. Of course, Data at least had something more to do than just being awkward.

They've really wasted Anthony Rapp and Mary Wiseman this season. Though with the Spore Drive taking a backseat, it was clear these characters would too.

A logical scene to include would have been Stamets trying to talk with Tilly about his frustrations with how the situation with Hugh worked out. I mean, I liked that little scene with Stamets and Spock where he gave relationship advise, but it was kinda a WTF moment. Paul doesn't appear to have any close friends on the ship, but he works often with Tilly, and she's a logical (if awkward) sounding board.

It really smarts though that Culber has upstaged Stamets as this season has gone on. Culber has been given a real arc, and some dimensionality beyond "nice gay doctor." When he's not spouting technobabble, Paul just sits around looking mopey, with no forward movement. The writers clearly have him in a holding pattern until Culber figures his shit out. When this is all done, in the third season, we'll likely look at Stamets as being mainly "Culber's boyfriend" rather than the other way around as it was in the first season.

The writers also don't really seem to know how to write for Saru unless he gets a focus episode, and don't seem to know how to write anything even vaguely convincing for Ash whenever he's onscreen with Michael. At this point I wish they'd just kill the character off honestly.

After An Obol for Charon and Space Oddity, one would think the writers remember they already have an established, mentor-apprentice relationship with a great level of trust. Even all the way back to the first season, she was the one to actually confront Stamets about behaving strangely when the spore drive started to affect him.

Yeah I agree Stamets and Tilly haven't been used quite as well this season, but I still really enjoy the moments they do have. It seems pretty clear that once Spock came onboard a lot of the sciencey "figuring stuff out" scenes got redirected to him and Burnham, so once he leaves that will probably get shifted back.

If they ditch the Spore Drive, does Stamets really have a place on Discovery?

We know that Culber's journey will continue over Season 3, which suggests to me that Stamets isn't leaving the show. Or at least if he is, he would still be a recurring character.

If they're going the Voyager route and stranding Discovery somewhere far off from the Federation, it likely won't really matter if there's any good reason for him to stay on the ship at all.

Oh shit I'll have to edit my other post but found this ship chart
