Discovery's Facebook page officially announced the Georgiou/Section 31 show.

I already posted a new thread for this on Future of Trek. I don't think we need a dedicated thread here given it will be - you know - a new show.

I still maintain it's a terrible idea, and sure to give many fans ten times as many fits of rage as we've seen previously.

I am honestly at the point where I don't give a shit what "the fans" think or do any longer.

I can watch and enjoy without worrying about how a bunch of spoiled, entitled malcontents who pride themselves on being hyper-critical asses are going to react.

I'm thrilled that Kurtzman and the production team obviously feel similarly.

This type of series wouldn't have been as interesting in the Picard Series Era when both of Section 31's potential biggest enemies are diminished or gone. And the Federation's not "holier than thou" or humbled yet. I think it's a good Cold War combination.

I've never been a huge fan of Section 31, but I HAVE been a huge Michelle Yeoh fan, and a pretty big Star Trek fan ...so I can't imagine not liking this show to some extent. I'm pretty optimistic

As for the Romulans, it's canonical that during this time period no one has officially seen them face to face. Of course, the Tal'Shiar probably has operatives working undercover as Vulcans, much as we saw in Enterprise, but whether Section 31 is aware of that is another thing entirely. Hell, maybe that's the entire plot of the first season.

Unclear but that unclarity can be taken advantage of. The Obsidian Order is too good of a fit for a series like this. It's Kelvin Timeline, but Uhura asks for a Cardassian drink in the 2009 film. I think -- but don't hold me to it -- there was a reference to a Cardassian being on Vulcan in the 22nd or 23rd Century, referenced in a DS9 episode. I'm going to look that up right now.

EDIT: A Cardassian, Iloja of Prim, who was a Cardassian poet living in exile on Vulcan during Tobin Dax's time. The episode this was referenced in was "Destiny" (DS9). Looks like it would've been between the 2220s and 2240s. That's good enough for me.

I'm assuming anything we see in the Section 31 Series would be undercover, so it's a way around Section 31 operatives seeing Romulans. I'd argue -- but can't prove -- they probably knew what the Romulans looked like as far back as the 22nd Century. It benefits no one in Section 31 to let Earth know, during or after the Romulan War, that the Romulans are the same race as the Vulcans.

Especially since xenophobia was still something humans were getting over. That would've opened it right back up, during a time when Section 31 probably would've thought forming the alliances that would've eventually led to the Federation were critical. Strength in numbers. Earth by itself might not be enough against whatever they might face in the future. Section 31 would be mindful of escalation.

As I've been rewatching Season 1, I've also been simultaneously listening to 3 podcasts about Discovery - The Edge, DiscoTrek, and Transporter Lock - and it bothers me that DSC's writers created a false controversy surrounding sexual assault and torture - one which affected the way that two of those 3 podcasts viewed portions of the series - by unnecessarily trying to keep the Ash Tyler/Voq connection a secret.

yep, Discovery had me when they announced she was part of the cast. I was worried she was just on a two episode appearance after her death scene.

So I was rewatching the latest trailer, (the Spock smile one) I noticed there appears to be a shot of Georgiou kicking Burnham in the face on what appears to be the same ship Spock was on in the stretcher shot. I wonder what’s happening here. I’m thinking Burnham doesn’t like what Section 31 is doing, maybe snooping around the ship

I finally saw that the short treks were available when I re-upped this afternoon. Last time I looked they couldn't be found (by me). So now I can see them. I've already watched 1x01 "Runaway," and really liked it. I love Tilly anyway (this is not news to anyone), but this just kind of cements that affection. She's funny, intelligent, kind, she listens, and I just enjoy watching her on screen. How she reacts to Po, how she comes to understand and empathize with her, the story just unfolds organically. She really is going to make a great Captain some day.

Which reminds me, if there's ever a Captain Tilly series, I'm already on board.

I'm about to binge as much of Discovery as I can. To go along with it, I have Orville Reddenbocker popcorn. Not because of The Orville, mind you, but because it's been my popcorn of choice for decades. Makes me think back to when I was a kid... you know, in the late-'80s and early-'90s.

Back when movies on TV were a special event, and popcorn was how you felt like you were really in the theater? I mean, that's how I did it.

A few random things:

1. In "The Butcher's Knife", the Shenzhou has a warp core similar to what we would've seen in Star Trek: Phase II. The designers did their homework.

2. In "Choose Your Pain", I still can't figure out how Harry Mudd knew what happened to the Buran.

3. If I were Lorca, I would've killed Harry just to shut him up. Or at least punched him in the face. * And his being from the Mirror Universe works in most cases, when rewatching, except in one instance: he shouldn't have looked away when a Klingon Guard kicked someone on the ground in the head. That's a natural Human reaction but I think it's too soft for a Terran.

* But hitting him with the butt of a gun works just as well.

Two thoughts about "Lethe": It's not a fucking holodeck (swearing at no one, just in general). It's a battle simulator room. When the simulation dissolves, the pathway in the room looks so narrow, it's nothing like the TNG Grid. It all looks like just a fancy 23rd Century shoot-'em-up video game. Further proof that it's just a battle simulator: There's a stack of phaser rifles just outside of it. It's not for recreation. It's for battle drills. And the Klingons are literally just projections of light. No physical matter from what I can tell. Nothing like a 24th Century holodeck.

When the Vulcan blows himself up, hoping to take Sarek with him, he mentions that he hopes Vulcan will secede from the Federation. In the 1988 novel Spock's World, by Diane Duane, Vulcan considers doing just that. So that reference is both foreshadowing and integrating material from the novels to fill in gaps about this time period.

I love it! Nice dodge on Lorca's part. Lucky for him, she wasn't talking about something that happened last year.

EDIT: The crystals in "Si Vic Pacem" on Pavho remind me -- in a good way -- of a more elaborate version of something you'd see in TOS or first season TNG.

I'm going to say in "Despite Yourself", Culber should've quietly called for Security before he approached Tyler with his findings. Maybe being Medical and not use to this particular type of situation, Culber wasn't thinking about that, but he should've. This could be a flaw in the writing but it could also be Culber's nature and not knowing what to do in a situation like this.
