Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

One of these beer belly tattoed guys that I don't even know the name off, but I recognise and he is like the older type you see behind a merchandise stand at MCM Comic Con if that makes sense. We were talking about Netflix shows and bunch of us already watch Discovery, but this guy just flat out said Discovery was bollocks because it doesn't look like the other shows and has turned Star Trek into a show for n-words and gayboys. I just did a Jim face and conversation moved onto Green Arrow.

This guy sounds like everything I can't stand. The more people like him hate the show, the better I know it is.

I've tabulated everything for the 1st Golden Gormaganders. Next is to post the thing. Part of me wants to post the results straight but I know I'd hate that. So I'm instead going to have different Star Trek characters present the awards.

Something like this deserves some flair, and I'm going to deliver it. With all the pomp and circumstance an Awards Show deserves.

And I'll have to have an avatar with me in a suit.

EDIT: This is me at my brother's wedding in 2010.

I just finished the show (I stopped watching right before the Mirror Universe, so I recently went back and started from the MU entry episode). The MU stuff was so much better then the klingon stuff. I actually liked it as much as I liked STD Episodes 2 and 3, meaning it wasn't spectacular but it was solid. The last two episodes managed to be ok, too. I mean, as a TOS prequel its still hilariously off (Why would Kirk never mention a war in which the Federation temporarily lost so much of its territory to the Klingons and fled back to Earth as a last stand at any point in all the times we see him interact with Klingons? Also, sorry but the garbled mouthed Remans of STD will never be real Klingons to me), but it was entertaining. Far from flawless (I never, even for a second, gave a shit about Tyler or his relationship with Burnham), but pretty decent. I'm actually interested in a second season, since without a major focus on the "Klingons" it has a good chance of at least matching the quality of the early episodes and the second half of the first season.

I am curious if we'll see any of Mirror Georgiou in Season 2. Also, am I the only one who thinks that the fact we never got a confirmed death for the normal Lorca means he could still be alive in the MU? I could see a few episodes next season dealing with both these things at once.

One last thing I must mention, and its a small thing (especially when it comes to bad alien make up, since terrible looking aliens is STD's bread and butter), and it didn't ruin any episode or anything like that, but really if the Kelvin Timeline can have bright green Orions, making them look like corpses (because god forbid a bright color besides blue or red shows up on Discovery) is really stupid. The STD Orions all look like they're normal Orions who have been dead for days, it looks really crappy. Its 2018, stuff like Guardians of the Galaxy is super popular so no one is going to find an actually green alien species ridiculous, even in the NuBSG style that STD was going for. There is no need to go cat vomit green on one of the more well known b-list Trek aliens. This is just a small thing, but it came to mind because they all just looked so terrible.

MU was a good 'hand wave distraction' :).

I agree the Tyler/Voq/Burnham wasn't that well handled in writing - but the acting/directing sold it. Did you really not feel anything?

Well, I felt sorry for Burnham, mostly because her actor is very good even if the writing in regards to the Tyler stuff wasn't the best. But I was never invested in Tyler or the relationship itself, so it didn't feel like a tragic loss or anything. I didn't particularly care if they got together, I was somewhat bored whenever they had scenes alone before he was "activated", and while I felt bad for Burnham because of how messed up the situation was for her I didn't particularly care outside of that.

I think it was oddly/hastily written (like a lot of the season) but also very well salvaged by the actors and production team (also like much of the season).

So I agree.

Enough of the real world. Time to watch "Will You Take My Hand?" Then into scripting the Awards. I have to get myself into Discovery Mode. Disco Mode.

Running Commentary, as always, to be added in as I go along.

TV-MA for SLV! They pulled out all the stops! Well, actually not really. I've seen much worse on Oz, a 1997-2003 HBO series about a maximum-security prison. One of the most raw programs I've ever seen... but we're here to talk about Discovery, so continuing on!

It's debatable whether or not the Federation is in such a dire state that Starfleet would go along Georgiou's plan... but I love seeing Emperor Georgiou in command anyway. She's not having any of this Federation nonsense.

Saru: "Many find me simply unpalatable."
Georgiou: "Mmmm... I don't know about that."

Now I wish I didn't eat already. I'd be hungrier.

Right off the bat, I'm going to say despite Starfleet's desperate decision to try to destroy Qo'noS based on fear of losing the war, Burnham still stands up to Georgiou. Burnham not being one who blindly falls in line with whatever Starfleet Command says is what will ultimately save the day. As the star of the show, Burnham speaks for the show, and she's saying she's not okay with this. People not okay with a shadier Starfleet won't be okay with what Starfleet decides either, but what the star of the show thinks matters more to me.

Onto the credits. I'm not going to be as detailed with the rest of the episode.

Tilly was totally unprepared for meeting Emperor Georgiou.

And we've reached the Orion Embassy on Qo'noS! Going with Burnham's plan instead. Here's where we get into the fun!

Burnham (to Tyler): "I look around and I see people living their lives." I didn't comment on the Embassy because I was too busy enjoying those scenes. You just lose yourself in it. At least I did.

Rushed as it was, I do like the solution to ending the Klingon War. No planets are destroyed and the solution was reached by Burnham, with the help of AshVoq, having an understanding of Klingon psychology. At least a better one than before. This is where Sociology comes into play.

It was sad to see Burnham and Tyler part ways. Tyler said he's no good to either world or maybe he's good to both, but I wonder how long he'll be accepted among the Klingons if L'Rell steps away for even an instant? Eventually the novelty of a Human speaking Klingon will have to wear off. Or maybe they'll see him as a constant joke? I'm just speculating out loud, so don't read too much into my wondering.

Back on Earth. Looking very much like Blade Runner from a skyline view. I approve. It's one of my two all-time favorite movies. Along with Bonnie & Clyde. The Orion Embassy also reminded me a little of Blade Runner. Except on the streets.

And Burnham is a Commander again! She stopped more bloodshed on a mass-scale. I think the Klingon War would've started in "A Vulcan Hello" and "Battle at the Binary Stars" no matter what Georgiou or Burnham would've done. T'Kuvma and his followers were itching for war with the Federation no matter what. Nothing Starfleet could've done would've been good enough to stop it. But, in "Will You Take My Hand?", Burnham found a way to stop it when Starfleet would've continued down a path of defeat originally or would've gone down an even worse path had they followed through with Emperor Georgiou's plan.

"The only way to defeat fear is to tell it no." That's a great quote and a great quote to hear in this episodes. Is it speechifying? Yes. Call it that all you want. Mock it all you want. But that doesn't mean it's not true. "The only way to defeat fear is to tell it no."

BUT we don't need the inserts of Burnham's commentary while Cornwell speaks at the end, afterwards. "As it should be." Yes, we know. ;)

Then there's the applause, and that's a great way to end the season... except it's not the end yet! Cue the Enterprise! Now it's the end! At last until January, that is.

"Will You Take My Hand" still feels like a 9. So, I stand by my original rating.

Off-Topic but Still Trek: is it me or is there a correlation between how much people like Star Trek Into Darkness versus how much they like Star Trek Beyond? I don't like Into Darkness but I like Beyond. ID is in fact the only Star Trek made since 2009 that I don't like. Whereas most people I know who really like Into Darkness (a lot) were somewhat less thrilled about Beyond. I've seen it on TrekBBS, I've seen it a lot elsewhere online, and I've seen it in Real Life. So there must be something to it.

Random Thought: names for two of the upcoming Star Trek TV projects are Star Trek: Reliant and Star Trek: Destiny. Reliant seems like it would fit the Khan mini-series better. Probably leaving Destiny for Picard as they build a bridge to the 25th Century.

So... if we have Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Destiny, what are the people who call Discovery "STD" going to do?

Freaking A. There's more to scripting the Awards than I thought. 47 categories and the winners, times the characters and witty dialogue. I'm about a third of the way done.

But... in the meantime, I can't stand always seeing myself in the tuxedo anymore than I could stand actually wearing it. I'll "change back into it" once I post the Awards Show.

Simple, the Picard series becomes STD, and Discovery remains DSC. It'll be fun.

STID was "entertaining hot garbage." I've likened it to a really twisty spinny amusement park ride. It's fun at first, and gets your adrenaline and excitement Going, but at the end you just want to get the fuck off while it's still spinning.

And then you throw up.

STB was a far better film, and infinitely better Star Trek.

The STD crowd (okay, that does not look right no matter how it's put!) will probably call Discovery "STD" forever and ever. I dare not post actual speculation about what they'd call Destiny. I don't want to give them ideas...

"But Garth came up with it!" Not something I want credit for.
