Geeky, But Practical

I challenge everyone to come up with at least one item that they would love to have in their house that non geeks/nerds/dweebs wouldn't. The catch is that they have to be useful.

I present to you: Stargate Coasters

^Damn you. Now I want one.

My other item is the TNG Phaser universal remote. Take THAT, Channel 5....

My awesome Borg regenerator shown here behind my, then, future wife and on display for all to see. It was useful in that it helped convince her to marry me

I need a lamp over my table and actually contemplated getting this one. Lately, though, I've been thinking about building something like it from whatever loose parts I can find in one of the big DIY warehouses here in town.

I'm not a big Dr. Who fan but I'm itching to knit this:

Apparently a while back the BBC tried to get the creator of this free pattern to remove it from the 'net for copyright reasons, but since the creator doesn't make a profit from it the BBC wasn't successful. I've seen quite a few versions of this pattern on the 'net and my favourite was knit in a variagated yarn with black and bright primary colours. It sounds tacky but it worked really well.

A couple of years ago I designed a series of Star Trek office desks. My brother-in-law and I considered custom building them to sell online. Unfortunately it never came to fruition (the labor and materials involved made them to costly to produce) but I still dream of building a couple of them for myself.

But here is the deal. Instead of something "Trek-like", I designed them to look exactly like the consoles used in the shows. I did version for TOS, TNG/VOY, DS-9 and ENT. The TOS desk was based on the briefing table and Kirk's desk in his quarters. The one for DS-9 was based on a Cardassian console seen in the crew quarters. The TNG/VOY 24th Century Starfleet desk was made to resemble the CONN on the Defiant. (It has a wonderful shape.) The one from ENT was built to resemble the main tactical station in the armory. But each one had a built in compartment in the top to hide a flat screen monitor. Once you closed the compartment the screen would look like it was part of the desk's "computer console". (We would also provide a custom desktop wallpaper and screensaver designed to match the console graphics to help complete the illusion.) The keyboard and mouse would be housed in a hiding pull-out drawer. The hardrive and supply storage would also be similarly hidden. The desk's graphic consoles would be lighted and equipped with blinkies. I even looked into adding ambient sounds and doing them in a "metal" finish like on the show. Once the desk was "closed" it would look like you looted Paramount's set storage.

So basically what I want is a DS-9 Cardassian console desk for my office. (I would also do the office to look just like one of the guest quarters, including the window and lighted wall struts. I may even include a replicator and pocket door to complete the effect.) It would be practical... but very very geeky. :rommie:

If I can't have that... I want this:

And if that doesn't work, I want a desk that resembles the cockpit controls of the Millennium Falcon.
