Gary Sinise as DAVID McCoy?

Gary Sinise is a particularly good actor and a great human being. Having said that, Sinise playing McCoy's father seems like it's going to the well too often. This can't be just a retro look back at TOS with a few stories to glue it together. Nah, a few nods to the past is fine -- even welcome, but too many will just make this incarnation a farce.

I believe in the writers ability to stay true to trek and dazzle us with compelling stories. Focus on the stories and the rest will come naturally IMHO.

The Force Awakens still did a billion dollars. I'm sure CBS will see a connection.
True. And maybe, as usual, the suits will be oblivious. BUT, if not, then maybe - just maybe - they'll be able to see that making a ton of money now AND maintaining quality of the product so that it is better able to continue earning in the future is superior to JUST making a ton of money now, and they'll have a care.

Yeah, I know. I also want a flying pony. ;)

I would say no, especially first season. Love the actor and character, it's just that for Trek to truly succeed in the future, it'll have to create a "brand new" universe to carry on. Find your footing and identity first, then on you go.

Indeed. I'd take the actor making an appearance - but as a NEW character, please.

As Admiral David McCoy, chief of Starfleet Medical? Perhaps. As Lt. Commander David McCoy, starship physician? A waste of material.

Except that the exact same thing done *wrong* is what the fans disliked about Episode VI

What did fans supposedly not like about what exactly?

I'd like STD to stand on its own two feet but am sure CBS will put some connections in there to TOS.

$2 Billion ;)

Sorry: I misread this and didn't notice you were talking about McCoy's dad! Sure, Sinese could play the dad of a young McCoy.

Original post:
When DeForest Kelley played McCoy in the mid-1960s he was in his mid-40s (born in 1920). He might have looked a bit older being a heavy smoker. Gary Sinese was born in 1955, so is now 62 years old. Back in 2009 he could have played a original TOS-age McCoy but not a younger pre-TOS McCoy. That would be even harder for him now.

As much as I love Gary Sinise and I'm sure he would be great in everything he's cast in, I'm much more looking forward to new characters and new performers. It's always so exciting to get a new Star Trek crew, a new group of people to get to know and potentially love.

What if Discovery had Picard's grandmother, Sisko's grandfather, Janeway's great-uncle, young Jimmy Kirk and Admiral Archer hanging out together!
