Gary Sinise as DAVID McCoy?

I know that people have said that he ought to play Bones before (he's too old now unless Leonard/someone else time travels). But what if he played Bones' dad, David? All we ever see of him is when he's dying of that disease in STV - we don't know when he died or how old McCoy was when it happened. It may have happened between TAS and the films, or between one film and another...

God, please no. Can't we allow Discovery to stand/fall on its own merits. I don't need half the known Trek universe crammed into it.
I disagree.

-- I want to see Lt. Cmdr. Finnegan in this....
-- And have it so that Finnegan and Kevin Riley's father grew up in Dublin together....
-- And have Lt. Finnegan talking to Captain Mayweather (Grandson of Travis) one day, recalling the song that he and Riley Sr. used to sing in their favorite Dublin pub...

No, no more connections please. Sarek I'm cool with. Hell, it even makes total sense. A drop of connection with Michael Dorn as Worf's ancestor? Yeah ok....
And the fact that we just KNOW we're gonna see the Big E at some point is fine with me.

But no parents or siblings of other TOS characters please. Small Universe Syndrom is ok to a point. ;)

Agreed. A little touchstoning is nice IF it fits the story, but honestly, no, I'd rather NOT see relatives of characters or have every well know character from TOS parade through 'Discovery' at some point. It's supposed to be a HUGE Universe.

If it IS something directly affecting Earth and the Federation, 'Sarek' can make sense and add to the story; and harry Mudd gets around so, yes, I can buy him appearing. beyond that - let these new characters (whomever they are) take the spotlight.

I'm sure CBS has seen the popularity of Rogue One and will now be trying to shoehorn in every character and every piece of minutiae they can.

I always thought Gary Sinise would have been brilliant as Leonard McCoy back when the idea of a reboot really started to take wing. (2006ish).

But I don't think we need a "relative" of McCoy.

I'd LOVE to see Sinise show up in the show somewhere.

This. The small universe stuff is the main thing concerning me about the show at the moment. Mudd was bad enough, we don't need every bit player and mentioned name in TOS appearing in Discovery. When objections were raised to another prequel, the main argument for one was the big unexplored universe that existed between ENT and TOS, so let's see that! Fresh faces, new ships, new stories, absolute minimum crossover.

I for one love the idea of the show using established Trek stuff as long as they use it in intresting ways. If done right it can only enhace what we have seen before. I mean what's the point of doing a Trek show if we you don't have fun with all the canon stuff at your disposal.
It is also fun in that you can take what is expected and turn it upside down. What if Mudd for exampe is trying to do something noble when we see him but it backfires which leads him to a life of crime?

As for David McCoy I also see him almost as a blank slate. I mean all we know about him is he will die someday, from Bones ending his life because of the pain he was going through, and that he has a son named McCoy. There is a lot of unknown about him to work with.

Before I knew who the cast was for Star Trek 2009, I remember thinking Gary Sinise would make a great Bones. Interesting he is possibly being tapped to play Bones' father.

I mentioned this 10 years ago on this board when people wanted Sinise as McCoy for the 1st Abrams film, and I think it applies in this thread, too...

That is, I have always found Sinise to be lacking warmth in his acting. While I think he is a relatively good actor, I have a tough time emotionally connecting with him and his characters -- and I think it is due to that (IMO) lack of warmth; i.e., Sinise's portrayals have almost always seemed cold to me (with the exception of Lt. Dan).

Granted, Karl Urban is not particularly "warm and fuzzy", but I have often been able to emotionally connect more with Urban's acting portrayals than with Sinise's. DeForest Kelley's portrayal of McCoy made him out to be irascible, but with a butt-load of humanity mixed in. I think Urban captured that pretty well, possibly better than Sinise could have captured it -- especially the "humanity" part.

Except that the exact same thing done *wrong* is what the fans disliked about Episode VII. So hopefully, even if there are a lot of references to past Trek, they'll be done with care.
