I could have swore I read a new article about Gary Mitchell there about him getting possessed by a god like entity I can only assume in relation to the new movie. Was I dreaming?

Also who saw the new 'Prometheus' trailer and was it any good. i saw something under the guise of a Prometheus trailer about a guy describing his fight in space with a fleet of alien ships. Was that it or was that something different. I didn't catch the end of it but he relates how their weapons tore through the alien ships in a special effects battle. It looked pretty goo, whatever it was. I doesn't seem to be Prometheus. I'm confused.

I think you are mistaken about Gary Mitchell having anything to do with the new movie. It's often been a source of speculation by the fanbase whether Mitchell will appear, but nothing is confirmed as of yet.

As for him being possessed, some of the novels have gone into depth about this idea. In the excellent Q Continuum series by Greg Cox, Mitchell's abilities developed as the result of influence by a powerful being trapped on the other side of the barrier. It's suggested that this being (known as 0) used some kind of astral projection to implant a fraction of it's power into Mitchell, which has the additional effect of being able to influence and control Mitchell.

A lot of fans have taken similar ideas and theorised about Mitchell being possessed or influenced given the rapid change in his personality and the fact that Kirk was unable to get through to him like he did with Dehner.

There's even the suggestion that the entire events of WNMHGB took place in an alternative reality. This is based upon the fact that Kirk's middle initial is R in the episode, whilst later on the series it's established that his middle initial is T (as in Tiberius). I personally disregard the episode and the concept of the Galactic Barrier because of the implausibility of the Enterprise being at the edge of the galaxy (by what has been established later on in the franchise).

Peter David's Q Squared also mentiond this. It says that Gary's powers (and the powers of those from the earlier vessel) are a result of Q (who is in a weakened state) trying to get back through the barrier.

The first two issues of the recently launched Star Trek coimics based on the new movie featured a re-telling of the Gary Mitchell story. There have been a number of articles about it and some threads about it even here.
