Gary Mitchell: should he be in it?

I would like Gary Mitchell to be a MAJOR character in this movie and any subsequent shows. I feel that his backstory with Kirk warrants this, and the fact that he's one of TOS' most tragic characters would make his fate in WNMHGB even more powerful to future viewers.

We know from dialogue that Kirk requested Mitchell to be part of his first command crew. Therefore if the movie deals with Kirk's first command, Mitchell should be included.

Broken record time: if this is supposed to be a true prequel, then yes he has to be in it in order to be consistent with canon, unless the storyline takes place after the events of Where No Man, of course.

Cheers!

Alex

i wont start a new thread, but since the consensus seems to be that Gary should be in it, should we also see a young carol marcus that Mitchell introduces Kirk to? (If we assume she's the little blond lab technician, which I do). I mean that might be the way to include Mitchell, is we see him introduce Kirk to Carol.

Again, depends on timeline.

In TNG's premiere episode, Picard had to pick up Riker on the way to the first assignment....could be the same deal with Gary Mitchell...he's on assignment somewhere else. But before he can connect with Kirk, we have the filmed adventure.

If this movie is full of Fanwanks, than it definately will suck. I can just see it now. Let's have Finnigin in the movie as well just to beat up Kirk to make everyone happy. God I hope it doesn't come to that.

As to the question, no I don't want him in it.

I don't think having Gary Mitchell in it would be considered "forced" or "fanwank." T'Pol maybe, but Gary definetly belongs in the move, IMHO. :vulcan:

Sure, why not? He doesn't even need a line.

Kirk's best friend, the one he got as much advice from as Spock and McCoy before he bit the bucket? Oh, if he's in, he needs to be one of the main characters.

It'll be like having Harvey Dent (the future Two-Face) in the first Tim Burton "Batman" movie, or Dr Connors (the future Lizard) in the "Spider-Man" series.

Nothing like a little foreshadowing.

I think Gary should be in the film, yes. As has already been pointed out, Gary is Kirk's closest friend - and the helmsman (possibly also XO, I don't remember if Spock was XO in WNMHGB or just the science officer).

Casting, though...I dunno. Nathan Fillion, maybe?
