Garek?

Papermoon

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Ok so I've just finished the whole show (and I need a hug!)

I've got a few questions though, like what happened exactly, to Garek? Did he become the leader of Cardassia?

We don't know what happened to Garak only that he ended his exile. Presumby he's some kind of leader given his prominence in the resistance. As referenced above, the actor himself wrote some novels describing possible events after the war.

Been a while since I read "A Stich inTime" the aforementioned book. But from memory is was quite a good read andis set after WYLB though we learn more about what "plain simple" Garak was up to before his exile

He wrote one novel: A Stitch in Time.

If you're interested what he was up to after the Dominion War according to the novels, Memory Beta has a summary of that (obviously there are spoilers for the novels):

Don't let's forget that the upcoming documentary will plot out season eight. Maybe there will be some mention of Cardassia and Garak.

The upcoming documentary?!? Oh please let that be a thing!
Behr announced it at the Las Vegas convention this past summer. One of the things they filmed was a session in which the writers reunited to brainstorm the course of a theoretical eighth season.

In the TV show he went back to Cardassia to help rebuild it. It makes sense that he might have become its leader because he probably had the perfect image and message to be accepted to the job. The patriot who fought for Cardassia against the Dominion from afar even during exile.

It'd be interesting to see Section 31's reaction to him becoming leader. For the same reason they must have loved him during the war they would hate him after it. I imagine failed assassination attempts.

Personally, I can't see Garak becoming the leader of Cardassia--and neither did Andrew Robinson in (the really, really wonderful, highly recommended "A Stitch in Time"). I could see him becoming a pivotal behind-the-scenes operator, bridging the gap between Cardassians and Federation types.

Garak doesn't figure much in the relaunch, post-last episode novels (curses! he's my favorite character!). He's in the half-book-length "The Lotus Flower" (the Cardassian tale in "Worlds of Deep Space Nine, Vol. 1").

No it won't. (Unless there's been an update that I missed.)

The writers reunion for the doco will be planning out a theoretical first episode of season 8.

Sounds good, thank you for the correction.

In order to reign in expectations though, it might be important to note that "map out some of what they would like to do later in a notional season eight" doesn't mean they have plotted an entire season, it may just be a loose wish list.
