Games to Move Beyond 'Cinematic'?

I'm surprised they didn't mention Uncharted 2. That was a cinematic masterpiece, so much so that it could have easily been a movie, and a better example than most of the games listed combined, and the soundtrack had a lot to do with that. Red Dead Redemption also had a very good soundtrack that made you feel part of the universe.

That article was depressing. I've always considered the move towards the Hollywood cinematic style to mark the death of gaming for me, so reading an article suggesting it should go even further is just ... ugh.

Of course, I'm just a grumpy old school gamer who hates pretty much everything made after 1996. You guys can enjoy your waggle and HD graphics -- I'm going to go play Shinobi.

But to be fair, this is a good suggestion. Modern gaming has done a great job creating an immersive cinematic experience with its storytelling and graphics, so music really should move along with that. Having a "Level 1" track and "Boss" track just doesn't work with the style of today's games.

It'll develop once some producers realize that music plays heavily into an atmosphere too and can set a mood (which everyone already knows).

Given that tentpole games like MW3, Batman or Mass Effect have huge budgets (to rival modern movies) and are bringing in huge profits i believe it only needs a few games to be lifted above the rest because of their innovative soundtrack and gamers beginning to notice and buy it apart from the games.

However top line composers like Zimmer, Mansell & Co (not to speak about John Williams whose name alone would probably sell the game) aren't cheap but they could be worth it and another marketable name to put on the cover.

This is the complete opposite of what the article is talking about, but here's a video that replaces the music and sound effects in Battlefield 3 with NES music and sound effects. So awesome.
