Strong episode. I liked the action at The Wall, and Catelyn's scene at the end was the first time I actually liked the character.

And it looks like things will really heat up next week. I'm looking forward to it.

Next week: Catelyn and Tyrion realize it was all just a big misunderstanding and have a laugh about it over a few drinks. :)

What is that Wall Commander guy's problem? He's a lousy teacher, does he just hate his own job so much he really doesn't give a damn about anything?

He goes on about how Jon and Sam aren't men worthy of the Watch, when the Watch are composed mostly of the dregs of society in the first place. What makes him so self-righteous over them? What's his story?

Re: Game of Thrones Episode 1.4 - "Cripples, Bastards and Broken Thing

Pretty good, but I didn't like it QUITE as much as last week's, mainly due to a few adaptation complaints.

-Lots of awkward-sounding exposition dialogue this week (Tyrion/Theon, Jory/Jaime for instance)

-Vaes Dothrak was a little underwhelming compared to how it appeared in the book. The horse gate was there, but didn't have all the looted statuary from conquered peoples, one detail I always liked.

-Was expecting to see WAY more of the tournament this episode. I hope to hell it continues next episode.

-Rather disappointing that Sansa hears the Clegane backstory from Littlefinger rather than the Hound himself like in the book. :(

Re: Game of Thrones Episode 1.4 - "Cripples, Bastards and Broken Thing

Excellent... Much better than last weeks episode. Pacing was a LOT better - All the scenes were finally given enough time to not feel rushed. Sam's introduction was handled well. Lots of nice foreshadowing, and the back history of dragons and kings were woven in without sounding too exposition-heavy.

How far through the first book are we, percentage-wise, after this? Is it safe to assume season 1 deals with book 1?

Yes. The 10 episodes of season one will cover the first book. So far the show is tracking the book pretty well. (~40% done so far in 4 episodes)

He just hates his job and everyone around him. He's not there by choice.

Another excellent episode. The things I loved:
- How the history was told through dialog between characters. I think it was the most history-heavy episode so far.
- The introduction of Sam was great, just like imagined him.
- Dany finally standing up to her pathetic loser of a brother. The look on his face when she hit him was priceless. Harry Lloyd is a great.
- And the shit has hit the fan in the end. Now the real fun begins ...

I'm loving Tyrion more and more. I realize that when dealing with anyone who isn't a "cripple" or "broken thing" he's a major ass, but I love him nonetheless.

I'm just sad we didn't get to see the swashbuckler. :( Though watching Arya do her balancing act and talk about all the things he told her was great.

Thought it was decent, though I enjoyed last week's episode a bit more. I got the feeling that this episode served more to introduce new characters like the Mountain and the fat kid who probably play larger roles as the series progressed.

I did like how the Dothraki queen is standing up to her brother and how she knows now that this dude is not king material. I also enjoyed the Lena Headley-Sean Bean scene. And the end made it for me. I didn't expect Lady Stark to strike so soon or boldly.

Good, not as good as the last one but better than the first two. The pacing was much better but it seemed to dwell on things I didn't find as important as scenes they kind of rushed in the earlier episodes. But I'm still glad they're giving time for characters and events to develop.

Some of the changes I liked, others I didn't so much but I'm guessing they've done it so as to not have characters progress too quickly. I'm curious why they left certain details out, such as Jon Snow actually asking Tyrion to do whatever he can for Bran when he visited Winterfell. As it stands it feels kind of contrived that he shows up to just hand them schematics to a saddle. I liked the little conversation between Jamie and Jory outside the king's chamber though.

Overall a decent episode but I wonder if people who were expecting snow zombies and sex all the time are getting bored with all the talking that went on in the episode. Knowing there are only 6 episodes left kind of makes me sad. They're going to have to pack so much insane crap on these next six, yet there's still so much left to go in following seasons and those wont get made for so many years. I wonder if the show will have a huge following then and become a cultural phenomenon, or if it'll just be somewhat of a niche show like Deadwood or The Wire was, with everyone watching it just raving about it but no one else really rushing to watch it.

No. I wouldn't. Everyone please stop telling stories and do something.

Don't worry, things are about to occur. Lady Starks 'arrest' of Tyrion is what really gets the ball rolling. Everything until now has been setup for what is to come.

Half a season in, and it was all set-up. Not that the season so far isn't entertaining in its own right. Still, these highly-serialized shows are so frustrating to watch on a weekly basis. I much prefer to ignore new programming, and marathon through a whole season if it's recommended highly enough.

I understand it's setup, but, you're 40% in... set up should be done for the most part...

My general feel has been most of any episode has been good to ok to boring and THEN in the last five minutes something REALLY interesting happens and a fade to black.

Each time I think, maybe I won't come back, there's not much here to care about... I don't know.

See, I don't see it as a symptom of serialized shows... just some of them. Spartacus, kicked ASS.

And I don't mind slower moving shows, but shows that spend 40 minutes of people telling stories of events that happened long ago and far away and it not having very much to do with the present moment... I lose interest.

Now if the Burnt Guy had told his story while trying to DO something with it, that would be interesting... but Grey Hair in the Temples Guy came in, sat down, told the story and then watched a guy get killed... meh.

Re: Game of Thrones Episode 1.4 - "Cripples, Bastards and Broken Thing

BTW, I forgot to mention.... HODOR! :D

(for newbies: the guy carrying Bran is sort of a book reader cult favorite - he is a simpleton who only can speak one word - 'Hodor', his name)

All those stories have a lot to do with the present events because they establish who is who and why do people love/hate each other.
It is important to know that there were real dragons just a 100 or so years before the main events of the series and that no one could hatch any more.
The short exchange between Tyrion and Theon Greyjoy at the beginning of the episode tells us who Theon is and what's he doing in Stark household. He may not be the most important character right now, but he will become one of the main characters later.
In the books, it was Sandor (the burnt guy) who told his story to Sansa and that establishes a creepy sort of a relationship between the two, but looks like it will be gone from the series. Anyway, looks like they want to develop the "Littlefinger is a creep who likes Sansa because she looks like her mother" angle more.
