I think the beetles were an analogy for the show itself, which just. keeps. killing. characters!

Speaking of improving on the book, the Sansa story has only gotten better. I was curious to see how Littlefinger would handle Lysa's death (in the book, someone else was present and he pinned the death on him) and the way Sansa saved his ass was priceless. But not only that, she's learning from him. She lied by telling the truth. Fantastic.

Yep. I think it's an improvement on the book as well.

Fun fact: Did you know "Oberyn Martell" has no "I"s in it?

Re: Game of Thrones 4.8 - "The Mountain and the Viper" - Rate and disc

:ack: That was the yuckiest thing ever.

Monologuing after he was dead would have been pointless, because then he wouldn't have gotten the Mountain to admit his guilt. Of course, that confession didn't work out too well for him.

Exactly. He wanted a confession and the name of the man who ordered the murder. It's hard to talk when you are dead ;).

Since English isn't my first language, I didn't get the Mountain's last words. He mumbled too much for me. Of course, I assume it's difficult to speak clearly when you are doing what he was doing. (Again ... :ack:). Did the Mountain finally admid that he killed Oberyn's sister and her children? Could someone fill in the gap for me, please?

Well, poor Tyrion. I wonder if he will be able to talk his way out of this. And poor Ser Jorah. Now he isn't even in the "friend zone" anymore ...

My only complaint was the way the Mormont betrayal was handled. It seemed very clunky and forced how the pardon note got to them in Mereen. In the previews, it showed that he already got his pardon a couple seasons back. And now, the same 2-to-3-year-old letter pops up again from Tywin Lannister, with Robert Baratheon's signature on it, after it had already been delivered elsewhere? What, was it sent back to King's Landing the first time and then bounce back around Essos until it found its way into Barriston Selmy's hands? I understand they had to get him out of Mereen but it really could have been handled better.

Yeah, I was wondering about this, too. But did we ever see how Jorah got his pardon? I always assumed that it was more like a promise. As in: "We are happy with your work and you will get your pardon ... one day". However, it was Robert Baretheon's signature on the document and Daenery's stated that the letter was dated to the year she and Jorah first met (3 years ago?). So I am really wondering if it took 3 years to deliver the letter. My theory is that Varis had the letter all along and was holding it back, because he was waiting for the right moment. That means that Jorah was right somehow. Varis is indeed trying to seperate him from Daenerys (if it is really Varis, who is behind it). Would be a smart move to disconnect her from at least one of her advisers.

^^^ Oh yes. The Vale Lords know who she really is now, so Littlefinger holding that against her is a non-starter. Yes, she holds most of the cards now.

She's still Tyrion's wife though, and as long as he's alive she cannot marry Robyn an become queen of the Vale.

She's also Robin's first cousin - I think that's a little too close a relation for marriage.

They've already been discussing it. In fact Robyn told her that when she became his queen she could put anyone she wanted through the moon door.

Yes, he basically "yes, I raped her, yes I killed her. I crushed her head. Just. Like. THIS!"
SPLAT!

He changed the order: He killed her children, then raped and killed her.

Re: Game of Thrones 4.8 - "The Mountain and the Viper" - Rate and disc

Holy shit that was intense. Has to be the most brutal death yet on GOT but a brilliantly choreographed and played sequence. Poor Oberyn. What a way to go.

Loved also how Sansa played the whole scene with the Lords of the Vale and Littlefinger and it will be interesting to see how this departs from the book. And where for Arya and the Hound now? I still don't see that Stark reunion happening yet.

Theon and the Bolton's scenes were well done, even if the gore of the flayed Ironborn looked quite tame compared to Oberyn's brutal death. Oh, I want those f*ckers to get their comeuppance soon!

Re: Game of Thrones 4.8 - "The Mountain and the Viper" - Rate and disc

Arya's laugh was just perfect. As dark as this show is, I love that it's not afraid to inject a little levity here and there. It doesn't take itself too seriously and I love that.

I didn't take that as a "levity" moment, I took the laugh as hysterical.

I am enjoying the show version of the Sansa, she's made her transition from harmful moron to useless moron to not a moron much quicker than in the books.

The fight was fantastic, had me on the endge of my seat. I knew the outcome but for a split second I though that maybe they had changed it to where Oberyn survives. The mountain was flat on his back having been impaled on a spear and the Viper was dancing around... so confident. I guess that was the entire point, I bought into the same thing that Oberyn bought into, that the fight was over...

Re: Game of Thrones 4.8 - "The Mountain and the Viper" - Rate and disc

I just hope the mountain is fucking dead so Oberyn didn't die horribly in vain. That and that Tyrion somehow makes it out of this.

I'm nowhere near giving up on the show, but if they kill Tyrion if anything short of a totally awesome way....that might do it.

And no, I haven't read the books, so don't spoil please.

Re: Game of Thrones 4.8 - "The Mountain and the Viper" - Rate and disc

There was a very clear shot of Oberyn's squire wiping his spear points with a sponge, a reminder that the Viper fights with poisoned blades. The Mountain is toast.

Re: Game of Thrones 4.8 - "The Mountain and the Viper" - Rate and disc

Superb episode, one of the show's very strongest. Funny, horrific, touching, visually gorgeous, and extremely well executed in just about every possible way. Loved the Arya/Hound scene and the other Eyrie ones, and that final scene is virtually a masterclass in action, drama and horror.

Fun fact: Did you know "Oberyn Martell" has no "I"s in it?
I'm stealing this.

My only complaint was the way the Mormont betrayal was handled. It seemed very clunky and forced how the pardon note got to them in Mereen. The small council scene in episode 6 ends with Tywin asking Mace to fetch him a quill and paper, so It's pretty much implied that the pardon was newly penned by Tywin, but made to look like it was from Robert from two years ago. It's handled a little differently in the book. When Barristan joins Dany, he's incognito as "Arstan Whitebeard." When he finally reveals his true identity to her, he also spills the beans on Jorah, as he was part of Robert's small council and fully aware of Jorah's past spying. As I recall, show Barristan mentioned he was NOT on the small council. And this way, the show could keep Jorah around for more of the season. In the book, I believe he's banished either prior to the capture of Meereen or just after it.

Re: Game of Thrones 4.8 - "The Mountain and the Viper" - Rate and disc

I generally stay away from these threads out of fear of book spoilers but dam I needed to see the response to that eye popping moment  I hope Tyrion lives or my enjoyment of this show will diminish greatly.

Then all is....not well, but fucker needs be dead. Along with another bunch of people. Get me right, I'm glad the show is getting an emotional response out of me, but it's oh so sweet when some people do get theirs.

Like Cersei, who I'm sure will be around for a while. It's a testament to Lena Headey, who for all accounts seems to be an absolutely awesome person, and is a great actress, that I hate Cersei with a fiery passion.

So is it next week yet? Or the one after that? :D
