They certainly have their defenders, but the general consensus is that books four and five (which take place concurrently) aren't as good as the first three and that they have a lot of material that can be cut down and streamlined. Some of the characters are already well into their plots from books four and five. Others are are only at their book three endpoint. There'll be quite a bit of reworking of the material next season, more so than in past seasons. If they're still aiming at a seven-season show, or at least leaving that open as a possibility, then they really need to be done with books four and five by the end of season five.If they've been doing 1.5 seasons per book, why would they cover two massive books in a single season now? Is the general consensus that these two books are no good?
For crying out loud, guys, pay attention to what thread you're in!

I apologize to anyone trying to remain spoiler-free who read my post above. Really thought I was in the other thread. Couldn't quickly remember how to put it in spoiler tags, so I just deleted it (though it's quoted too, so not a complete deletion).![]()
Here's where things get tricky. They've lost some of their best characters and the source material gets a lot weaker, but I think they're going to be pretty ruthless in cutting things down and reworking the material for the fifth season. Hopefully they get it right.
They'll probably be done with books four and five by the end of the fifth season.

Well hopefully JJRM will release books 6 and 7 soon enough.
Yeah, I agree.Ha ha! Look, we'll be very, very lucky to get book 6 out before the show finishes S6. But there is no way, I repeat, NO WAY, that book 7 will come out before S7 airs. The show will outpace the novels, as surely as the Titanic was going to sink after it hit the iceberg. There's no way around that fact.
They wouldn't have time. They've spoken of how draining it is making the show. They work all year round with almost no time off to get each season made and they can't manage more than 10 episodes per season. That's how complicated and onerous the production is.I wonder if he would let the show writers help him write the novel? He has the outline for it since he apparently gave that to the show writers.
Not just no.I wonder if he would let the show writers help him write the novel? He has the outline for it since he apparently gave that to the show writers.

The complexity of the adaptation is more difficult than inventing new material, but the main reason they can only make 10 episodes a year is the complexity and scale of the production itself. They only make ten episodes a year.
And they're only adapting pre-existing stories quite literally.
Normal shows make 22 episodes a year and they actually have to invent the material![]()
