Checkmate, I'm sorry, but she really did not consent to be married, she plainly had no choice in the matter, and explicitly said to Viserys that she didn't want to.
Bingo. At this point in the story, Daenerys is pretty much being used as meat to barter with.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

I just thought of something. Do you think they'll change the title or add a subtitle to reflect changing of sources the seasons go on? If they were to do that, I think it would work out better if they went the subtitle route. Something like A Game of Thrones: Season 2 A Clash of Kings.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

^^^
I think they'll just stick with Game of Thrones throughout, making use of the other book titles only as episode titles, probably either for season premieres or finales.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

That's why I didn't like the title. The "game of thrones" the title refers to (without going into spoilers) is just a sideshow to the real story.

Without going into spoilers, I've read all four books and the series is still awfully concerned about gaming around thrones.

And going into spoilers a little:
Right, I get that there's a kind of supernatural war of some sort brewing in the distance. Winter is coming, and with it, is coming the Others, who are a bit of a problem. There's other pieces on this cosmic chessboard - Azor Ahai and his Lightbringer sword, whatever the hell Bran is becoming - and they're sure to have their supernatural war.

That's nice. And maybe it'll be really important in the next three books. But the extant four books toys endlessly with the issue of the successor to Robert Baratehon, from the summer knights of Renly to Arianne's nipped-in-the-bud stab at Queen Myrcella.

On the other hand the spectre of a return to the age of a divided Westeros, with the Kings of the North and the Seastone Chair. There's Whispering Wood and the Red Wedding and the fall of Winterfell and all the chapters that take place in King's Landing and most of the arcs of Eddard, Jaime, Tyrion, Cersei, Davos, etc. etc. etc.

And on the other side of the world is the last Targaryen claimant to the throne, spending a good long time evolving into a queen. This seems to have some role in the prophecies and whatnot, but that's a handful of hints stacked against the three books of Daenerys and her would-be court.

These books are about the thrones. The Iron Throne, the Seastone Chair, the whole shebang (indeed, the plural of 'thrones' is more applicable to the books after the first one). They may also be about this supernatural war that's coming, but in no sense is that a bigger concern in the novels to date then the politicking of the Seven Kingdoms - the latter dwarfs the former.

Far from it - "game of thrones" *IS* the most appropriate title. It is what drives the entire series, the games that the nobles play to gain the throne. The other stuff is the sideshow.

In the opinion of this author, sex is added only to attract female viewers....
Because it does. Despite trying to pretend otherwise, women are just as much -- if not more -- obsessed with sex as men are.

There's a reason those insipid romance novels are so popular with women. (Hint: It's not because of the quality of storytelling.)

I think you should write to the author of the article.

In her words:
Over the past few days I have received hundreds of e-mails and reviewed countless tweets taking issue with my review of the fantasy series “Game of Thrones”, which began Sunday night on HBO. When I say “taking issue,” I am speaking euphemistically. Most respondents were horrified or furious or both.
and
Amid the commentary I received a total of three supportive notes from people I am currently looking into legally adopting.

You can be the fourth one!

Given the latest episode, can we drop the rape argument now? Seems like she's ok... ;)

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

Just seen this - an awfully boring show with some very bad lines and poor acting - does this get any better in the second episode or should I gave it a miss?

No.

For starters next episode doesn't even air here until later today.

Besides, rape's rape even if you make a game face after.

Let the arguments continue!

It's a surprising position because watching the show I'd kind of thought it was there more to titillate male viewers.

Feel free to continue to tilt at that windmill if you guys like, but seeing as how the character herself doesn't even seem to agree, feels like a pretty shaky ground to defend...

Most here disagree with your opinion of it, but if your reaction was that strongly negative I'd say it's just not a show for you.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused why you'd ask that question in a thread where an amazingly overwhelming number of people thought it above average or excellent. I know you're kind of the "hipster nerd" who doesn't like all the popular stuff, but this is actually a really solid show despite this episode's dialogue being exposition heavy.

Give it a miss. It's clearly not for you. Perhaps you could take your Ritalin instead, since slow, deliberate storytelling is apparently too much for your ADD riddled mind to handle.

Son, if you are going to get into flaming other posters at least make it interesting to read. I have had better sass off children. In future think longer, try harder.

For Ginia Bellafante (the author of the review) fantasy genre is exclusively a boy thing. The only way to attire women is... sex!

“Game of Thrones” is boy fiction patronizingly turned out to reach the population’s other half.”

“...is the sense you get that all of this illicitness has been tossed in as a little something for the ladies, out of a justifiable fear, perhaps, that no woman alive would watch otherwise.”

Infraction for flaming. Comments to PM

Best to let things go, lest you get an infraction yourself.

Re: Game of Thones: 1x01 - "Winter is Coming" - Premieres April 17 on

I'm just going to ask this question knowing the answer(s) will be quite subjective..

Watched the first ep just now. Have not read the books. I want to know if the gore and sex content is on par with The Sword of Truth series (the books). I stopped reading The Sword of Truth after the second book because all the torture and bondage stuff was too much for me, I actually regret having read them at all (leaving aside that they were also, imho, not great writing). So I'm just trying to gauge if I would be in for the same reading these books and, possibly, watching this series.

I liked the first ep, plenty of interesting stuff in it.
