Galaxy Quest Series Back On

If they ditch the sequel series aspect it could work. let me explain. Traditionally when you made a TV show based on a movie, you basically readapted the movie as the pilot with recasted characters. But instead of the plot coming to an end like in the movie, you just continue the hijinks. See the Harry and the Hendersons Movie and TV show for a classic example.

This is actually easier than simply recasting everyone and continuing the story from the end of the movie. Its a new adaptation, so you don't have as much baggage.

Galaxy Quest is known for mocking sci-fi tropes.

Perhaps they could go with the trend of updating old properties with actors in their twenties and thirties (Star Trek '09, Lost in Space, Dune, Blade Runner 2049).

The concept is over the hill actors from an old SF TV wind up in space. Not sure how you figure twenty-somethings into that.

The Thermians come back and only the hot reboot actors are available to help this time?
Yeah that would work. But only if the older actors/characters are on board too. Which I will confess would be my pitch. There would be a group of Thermians who are only familiar with the reboot/sequel version of GQ which places them in conflict with those who follow the original. Make some meta commentary on the "Not my Star Trek" mind set.

I had a hard time seeing the point of a series (especially with no Alan Rickman, easily the best part of the film) but I could see this working.

Man, I know exactly how I'd do this as a send up of reboot culture.

Curious to see what the creatives here do with the actual project. The original is a lot to live up to.

I doubt they're going to do a straight reboot.
Yeah, but my point is the main appeal of the film for me wasn't the characters or the plot. It was the performances of particular actors.

But then i was never a big fan of the film as many other Trekkies so I know I'm in the minority.

The movie was really meta in how it approached the characters and their TV series, and they could have a storyline where they're told by the studio that they're being rebooted with new actors, so then you have the old crew or what's left of it fighting for their jobs to convince those in charge not to change the crew. It's an opportunity to make a social commentary on the whole reboot trend.

IMHC:

Network Executive (to Jason): "Jason ... Jase ... How do I put this to you? You're old. You're ancient. Today's audiences want hip and young and modern. We want Galaxy Quest to sell something other than fiber powder and life insurance!"

Fiber powder... haha :D

I just realized that while the original is a movie, while this apparent new 'Galaxy Quest' is going to be a series. But that can still play into it.

Imagine Jason telling his crew that the biggest threat they're facing is not the Thermians, but that they're facing the decommissioning of their ship, ergo their very lives are at stake. And Jason tells his crew that they need to hit back at the union and strike.

The joke could be that the crew was never going to be replaced in the first place, but that what they saw was a shakedown cruise of an upgraded new ship with temporary crew members that was eventually going to be handed to them in the form of a new promotion for Jason.

On the other hand, that doesn't sound much like a series plot... unless they go with a meta serialized TV series that flows more like a movie which would also be meta in itself.

Maybe they could spoof Star Trek's ship naming conventions (have a new crew take command of the Protector-C).

Maybe they could work Daryl Mitchell into the series (similar to how Disco wrote Kenneth Mitchell's wheelchair into the show after he was diagnosed with ALS).

Meh, he just says in passing that "it's being written." Nothing to get excited about. Most stuff that gets written never gets made.

This is a great idea. I've been curious how they'd get them back off into space in any kind of a follow up since the series ended with the Thermians realizing the cast members weren't really their characters and them all going back to their lives on Earth. This could be a fun way to do that, and the reboot cast would be a nice way to bring in some younger actors.
