Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later, What changes Occur ?

DumbDumb2007

Commander
Twenty years later what changes would be made to the Galaxy Class ships ? Quantum Torps ? Different shields ? more powerful phasers ? Bio neural gel pac circuitry ?

Most likely, maybe, maybe, and maybe.

Honestly, whatever upgrades the ship would get would be determined by whatever new tech the writers invent along the way. The 20-year period was simply a way for the TNG Tech Manual to treat the Enterprise like a realistic ship; U.S. naval vessels go through similar periodic cycles of refits and overhauls to extend the useful life of the vessel.

Maybe it'll look something like this ... ;)

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occur?

They would be faster too.

Perhaps have holo-emitters installed throughout the ship.

Regenerative shielding, and maybe some ablative armour added.

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occur?

I think we would see variants with different style nacelles representing improvements in warp tech. Possibly something similar to 1701-E.

I think that alot of the "minor" tech would be updated...holographic viewscreen, weapons upgrades, stain resistent carpeting.

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occur?

It's an interesting question, and you have to wonder if the Galaxy concept would be kept a generation later. Would Galaxies continue to host crew families, and if not, what would you do with all that space? Would they still be used for exploration? I think maybe not, and that what Galaxies were left would be used more locally and empahsize their diplomatic functions.
Galaxy refit would surely include defensive upgrades at least.

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occur?

Hmm. Well, regarding crew complement, I do recall in "Yesterday's Enterprise," that Yar said the Galaxy-class was capable of carrying thousands of troops, so I can see a comparable increase in the Starfleet universe we know if families and civilians were no longer on board. Maybe they'd become even more multi-purpose, serving as troop carriers in some circumstances. Or maybe multi-generational ships for very long-range exploration/colonization to allow crew members to marry and have children.

Patrick Weber of the old USS Miranda used to have a more realistic "Galaxy refit" design which does exactly that. The nacelles look a bit more like those of the Ent-E (but still flat at the top). Furthermore, the dark areas at the back of the Ent-E's saucer are also placed onto the refit Galaxy.

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occu

Shields, weapons, sensors, structural integrity field, warp engine, and computer upgrades most definitely.

Bio-Neural gel packs, extension of holo-emitters throughout the ship, new type/shaped warp nacelles and ablative armor are possible but could wait for a complete top to bottom refit.

A complete refit like the original Enterprise underwent, not for a while.

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occu

In reference to things like Bio-nueral gel packs just becuase Voyager had to use technobabble to make a small ship not feel inadequate doesn't mean the same meaningless, pay-off less garbage has to be put in the Galaxy class.

Certainly though things like Quantum Torpedoes will be used. I like the look of that refit, it makes a lot of sense.

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occu

Tuvok said it. "But there's nothing beyond the subatomic!"

Now that they know there are smaller particles to look for and detonate, it's only a matter of time before torpedo yields just get ridiculous.

Then of course they could nick the chronoton torpedoes from the kremin and the spacial charges used by the Malon seemed interesting, and are there realistic principles behind photonic cannons? Then of course none of those weapons Shelby was talking about in the best of both worlds were every implemented that I noticed?

If they have industrial replicators, how long till they build transportors capable of shifting an equivalent mass that they can pull apart vessels on a molecular level, shields and all.

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occu

How about Wesley Crusher pain booths. Standard on every new ship.

That'll teach the nerds to know more than their chief engineer ;)

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occu

Short of a full refit similar to what the original Enterprise went through just before TMP, probably only weapon, shield, and sensor upgrades.

But, as someone noted upthread, most US Navy vessels go through a rather heavy refit somewhere around twenty years old. Given the advances in technology that have come about as a result of facing the Borg, I would assume that most of the Galaxy class ships would be scheduled for rather extensive refits fairly soon afterward. US Navy aircaft carriers built in the mid-1940s underwent very lengthy refits in the early to mid 50s after the invention of the angled flight deck. Refits that were 5 to 10 years early.

With a more extensive refit, the Galaxy class ships would see new engines, upgraded power systems, holo-emitters placed throughout the ship, new turbolifts, etc. Ablative armor may be installed on a ship or two for testing, but would likely not be used extensively as of yet.

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occu

1- Warp drive added to saucer section.
2- Extra phasers on nacelles.
3- Ablative armour in sensitive areas.
4- EMH
5- Various other forms of technobabble upgrades.

Thanks. I tried to do a web search for equivalent images before being "forced" to upload this image onto the Internet (after not having found any since Mr. Weber's site shut down :( ).

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occu

I've always wanted this:

A weapons pod mounted near the rear of the saucer.

It would be easy to attach.

Just design the weapons pod so it had a base plate that matched the top of the interconnections between the engineering hull and saucer.

Saucer detaches, weapons pods base plate connects to the top of the engineering hull along with the pylon that supports the weapons pod, saucer reattaches to the top of the base plate.

Presto. You have your Galaxy class toting a large weapons pod that would include various types of hardware.

Re: Galaxy Class Starships 20 years later. What changes Occu

I never understood the idea of putting phasers on the nacelles. Aren't there phaser strips directly underneath at the end of the ship?

True enough, she does have an onboard antimatter generator.
