Galactic Barrier

I like the idea that the barrier is a natural formed energy field rather than a protection from some malevolent entity or galactic gestalt intent on conquering the races within! :techman:

How could Control conquer every other galaxy in the universe in the short period between DISC and TOS?

Time travel. I don't see a way for Control not to know how to build an Angel Suit - the data would have been utterly accessible to Leland.

I'm not keen on thinking of the Barrier as protection against bogeymen, either. I mean, it sorta tried to do that to the Kelvans - but it failed there! What good is a barrier that shreds mighty intergalactic starships but then lets their powerful crew slip in unharmed?

Possibly the Barrier is another aspect of that other purple anomaly out there, the Nexus: it isn't necessarily malevolent or benevolent, but does try to actively communicate with the creatures that crawl into it, through telepathy - it's just that the base instincts of us mortal intruders turn the communication attempt into banal dream-fulfillment.

In order to control multiple galaxies, an entity would need (among other things) communication between galaxies with a short time lag, like a year at most. Otherwise they'd have no idea what's going on in the places they govern. I don't know what franchise you guys are talking about (CONTROL?), but we all know that the idea is pretty far out there.

It's funny: our own single solar system is impossibly vast, a one-way trip to Pluto takes ten years, but our stories tame the Universe. We're all guilty of it. :)

For this specific ruler, which happens to be an artificial intelligence from Discovery (originally a Starfleet expert program doing strategic analysis and recommendations for the admirals), failing to communicate might not be that big a deal. The program could quite possibly easily cope with being split into segments that all serve the greater good even though only occasionally exchanging ideas.

Empires have been run that way, with different parts separated from the seat of the supposed sovereign by months or even years. When humans are doing the running, though, the distant parts of the realm will be likely to grow apart, despite or because of draconian measures. Sub-elements of an AI might be designed to break that mold, though.

OTOH, instantaneous communications across infinite distances might well be doable in Trek. I mean, DSC is all about those to begin with.

Heck, perhaps the Barrier is a phone booth for the very purpose, turning the users into beings that can speak to other galaxies with relative ease?

Electromagnetic plasma sheath / double layer..... hrmm..... ;)

Natural formed energy field quite probable.... ;)

(3...2.....1 until someone calls me out for "pseudoscience".... but very very intriguing alternative hypothesis exist out there.... )

Not "pseudoscience" but "nonsense". :nyah:
