Gaith does Wonder Woman

Is this suit concept on the right track?

  • Yeah. The comics suit looks ridiculous and will never fly on the big screen.

  • No, the comics suit is fine! Which is why there've been so many WW movies already!

Does it matter?

Of course it does. Wonder Woman has been rebooted so many times I've lost count, and if it's not as a result of yet another Crisis it's yet another writer taking over the character and seeking to revamp her in order to drive up sales of her solo title - sales that hardly qualify her as any kind of A-list character.

Yes but through it all she's remained Wonder Woman. Mostly they added or subtracted supporting chaacters or changed her base of operations. The "rebooting" has been cosmetic. Ms Marvel had her share of those. And A-List isn't always about sales.(Didnt the last Ms Marvel book get canceled?) Its about identity and resonance. Give the man of the street a basic overview of Ms Marvel and I'd bet some would think you were talking about Wonder Woman!

Ms Marvel, just isn't a character who has a firm identity to me. And I've been reading books with Carol Danvers in then since she was a non-powered supporting character in the Captain Marvel series. Mostly I remember her from that whole Immortus fiasco in Avengers and as Binary in X-Men.

And I remember her as being a central character in the Marvel universe for the past several years - as a member of the Avengers, as the leader of the Mighty Avengers, as a New Avenger and as a central figure in fighting the Skrulls and Normal Osborn.

I remember her for things like fighting an army of Super Skrulls in Central Park on her own.
And I haven't read many comics in the last few years.

Just an oddball thought here - how about Summer Glau?

Since she's already one of the best on-screen warriors in existence...:)

I think the biggest barrier to a WW movie is her mythological origin. It's kinda convoluted and might be difficult for some audiences to accept compared to other heroes.

I'm not sure it's more convoluted than, say, Harry Potter, and those movies seem to be doing fine.

Not to mention Pirates of the Caribbean, Clash of the Titans, etc.

Modern audiences don't seem to be allegic to mythology.

Honestly every one of those "live action" renderings looks pretty stupid and hilariously unfeasible for any actual fighting (particularly the spar spangled panties, hahaha). Women superhero costumes are so delightfully slutty and laughable, I can't think of a single one i've been able to take seriously.

The only one that comes to mind was Scarlett Johanson in Iron Man 2, but even that was just a simple skin-tight black outfit, it just makes sense that her whole body would be covered and it would allow maximum movement. Obviously I'm not saying WW should ape that or anything...... but I just take a big movie superhero seriously while fighting in panties or a skirt.

As opposed to, say, Harry Potter?

Or Pirates of the Caribbean? Or Clash of the Titans?

Modern audiences don't seem to be allergic to mythology.

The WW costume is something of an oddity; the basic design works quite well in comics (depending on who's drawing it) and in animation but it's one of those that's tough to translate into live action. If they ever get a live action movie or another tv series off the ground then I think they'll either ditch the classic look altogether and go with something mundane but a little sexy along the lines of the Huntress costume they did for that very short lived 'Birds of Prey' series. That or a more 'Gladiator' meets 'Xena' look with burgundy leather armour and a dark blue pteruges star shaped studs.

I've actually had a go a designing a few WW based costumes myself, with varying results: Link1, Link2 & Link3.

You're joking, right? You're subtly parodying the hilariously undeserved Whedon-fanatic love for a waif whose eyes are so big that her mild sexiness is cartoonish at best and reminiscent of pre-pubescence at worst? Because if so, very well played.

River Tam was a Manic Pixie Dream Girl with farcically impossible strength for a (non-augmented) human her size, and traumatized/insecure enough that guys could dream about easily "rescuing" her (in a wholly different way than her brother did) without having to deal with such mundane, real-life challenges as an actual personality, career, a social life, exes, etc. Not only was she not a warrior, she doesn't even belong near the list of best female screen heroines.

Don't get me wrong, I get that that's kinda hot. But a strong female warrior figure a la Leia or Hermione (or even Jinx or Lara Croft) she's not.

^As much as I like Summer Glau, she's defiantly not Diana material. Glau has a dancer's physique (duh) whereas Diana needs to much more robust. Of course you're never going to get an actress to exactly match the way she's drawn in the comics anymore than you're going to get an actor that can match the way most artists draw Superman.
Still, someone along the lines of Lucy Lawless or a slightly taller Rosario Dawson would be about right. Though if you must pick an actress from one of Whedon's shows then it'd have to be Morena Baccarin. ;)

I kind like Sarah Lancaster from Chuck for the role.

I think casting could to be an issue, not sure how big... Lynda Carter defined the role, and unfortunately, there aren't many actresses with THAT look and skill, they usually have one but not the other. Granted, an athletic look is more what they should go for IMO, not a big busted woman with long dark hair.

The costume should be more along the lines of a Gladiator/ Xena type look. WW wears that in the comics sometimes, and I think it would carry over into a movie. However, a more casual wear might be less leathery or something...

I think people are crazy if they think a studio will make a Wonder Woman movie with anything other than the actress wearing this...

They are gonna want sexy and showing as much skin as possible. JMHO.

Love Lynda to bits (saw her in Chicago a few years back and she's still hot, great MILF) but she isn't the greatest actress. Still, no one ever perfectly embodied a suphero/heroine as effortlessly. She could pull off the original costume (maybe I should rephrase that?) so I don't see a problem with the new actress doing the same
Sorry, big breasts are a must for me, WW is the perfect woman and that's what she would have.
Love Summer 'Put'em back in the holster' but don't see her as WW, again, too short

Fascinating...!

I see a nice, shapely match....

Now all we need is a strong script, and director...;)

Lynda Carter had both

She sort of acquired those acting skill on the job. ;)

Yeah, and count me out if they go the Cathy Lee Crosby spandex jumpsuit/powered down route. Cathy Lee Crosby in no way brings to mind Amazon Princess...

I have to laugh when anyone suggests noone would go into battle with a skirt or something similar. Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Scots, and others all had bare legs going into battle. In fact generally only the head and chest got any protection at all. Wonder Womans classic costume is great just the way it is.

Yeah she's Wonder Woman from a mystical island that's stuck in the Greco-Roman era... she's not Iron Woman. That's part of the character, she's a very old school classic warrior princess. I could even see some posters joking about that "Meet the ORIGINAL Warrior Princess..."

So yeah a leather skirt, maybe taller boots with greaves would work but she'd still show a lot of skin, arms, some leg, a little bit of neck and chest. Of course in the George Perez run in the 80s WW did wear a few outfits. One was the standard spandex swimsuit. Another was a more short shift like dress and then she had the "Battle regalia" with the helmet, armored skirt and other pieces, as well as a shield and cape and battle ax.

See no reason why she couldn't do the same. Maybe even make a little joke out of the classic costume by having someone give it to her or is actually a swimsuit... and wears it while she's fighting someone.

I would hate to see the WW costume become some leather jumpsuit thing.

Agreed. Superheroes aren't about "reality". They are idealized fantasies, this includes physicality and costumes. Embrace it, don't run from it.
