producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura this past week and was informed that G.I. Joe 2 could begin production in the spring of 2011 with the intention of making its way into theaters during the Summer Blockbuster Season of 2012.
the only concrete detail to emerge about the sequel is that it will be scripted by the writers [Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick] of the hit horror-comedy, Zombieland.
The settings for G.I. Joe 2 will be on a worldwide scale like Rise of Cobra per di Bonaventura. The plot, which we would assume revolves around Zartan assuming the presidency of the United States, is otherwise being kept under wraps right now.
MTV: Have there been any conversations about doing the sequel in 3-D?
di Bonaventura:....I'd definitely be open to it [3-D], but that's Paramount's decision.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra made over $300 million worldwide.

The videogame story picks up where the 2009 live-action film leaves off
A friend who is a G.I. Joe fanatic has he would have rather had the game than the first film when I sent him some screenshots and a link about the game last year:
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra -- The Game
I'm not sure if he was talking about the story or the visuals though.

The imdb.com listing:
Untitled G.I. Joe Sequel (2012)
in development. No info as of May 2010.

The cast are all contractually obligated to return for the sequel, so the only only real question there is whether or not the writers decide not to use any of the characters. And of course, which new characters to bring in.

The two main questions in my mind then are who is going to direct? Stephen Sommers is not contracted for it, but he might return. But if he doesn't, who would we want to direct it?

Also, the first movie reportedly had a huge production budget of 175 million dollars. Will the sequel have a budget as big, or will it get trimmed down?

That would be awesome if they went that route...

Even though the first film wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, I've recently read the G.I. Joe Cobra trade, written by Christos Gage. I would love to see an adaptation of that book.

It would be a total reimagining, with a more realistic feel. But who thought that someone could take Chuckles, who I hated and thought had the dumbest codename ever, and turn him into a badass anti-hero. I also loved how that trade approached Cobra.

Of course it makes sense to pick up the Zartan plot, also someone's got to free Cobra Commander. Here's hoping that they give him a more traditional mask this time. Also hoping they introduce more Joes and Cobra members.

I'd like to see the Twins and Firefly show up on the Cobra side. And Jinx(had a cameo maybe in the first movie), Flint, Dusty and of course Shipwreck show up for the Joes.

I was so conflicted about this movie. Obviously, a lot about it is pathetic and stupid. The CGI is terrible and there's some truly appalling acting, particularly from Channing Tatum, Rachel Nichols, and Marlon Wayans. I'm no acting expert, but the acting here was so wooden, I couldn't help but cringe. It's especially noticeable in such a big movie. Channing Tatum's acting and character are shameful. He is one of the worst lead actors I have ever seen in a movie (I haven't seen him in any other movie), and Duke was horribly written. He's supposedly the leader in the group and I suppose then by default the main character and he was just so bland.

I guess they spent all the dough on CGI, so they couldn't afford a lot of good actors, but the actors don't deserve all the blame. The writing was wretched too. On the other hand, I really liked the villains and the simplicity of the story. It was basically "group of bad guys want to take over the world with crazy weapon", "group of good guys try to stop them in series of over the top battles". A perfect basic cartoon-like story line, just as it should be. I appreciate that. I actually prefer it over the convoluted plot machinations of summer blockbusters like "The Dark Knight" or "Spider-Man 3" where they muck up the plot with so many things going on at once that it becomes tiresome. The lame, cliche flashbacks trying to connect all the characters (completely unnecessary) sucked, though.

I saw a lot of potential in the first movie. The simplicity of the plot was a breath of fresh air, and I thought Christopher Eccleson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were deliciously over-the-top as villains. I especially liked Levitt. His cartoon super villain voice was awesome...I just wish they hadn't changed it at the end (and put him in a stupid mask).

I would love to see a sequel where the heroes have better dialogue and performances, a similarly straightforward story, and no more shitty flashbacks in place of character development. The fact that they got new writers who are supposedly good at what they do (based on what I've heard about "Zombieland") gives me hope that this movie could realize the potential of its predecessor.

All it has to do is keep the few things that worked and get rid of the many, many things that didn't. And give Cobra a mask that doesn't look so dumb. I know they didn't want to follow the comics look because he wore a KKKish mask, but I don't see why they can't give him the helmet with the blank mask covering his face. :)

There are a few problems that may be impossible to solve, though. I don't know how they can make a good movie as long as they're stuck with Tatum in the lead. Unless they replace him or the writers massively improve that character at the script level so that no actor could fuck it up no matter how bad their acting is, Duke seems pretty hopeless. I also think it was completely idiotic to turn Baroness, one of the leading baddies, into a goody two shoes in the end (as was connecting her, Duke, and Cobra in flashback). I don't know how they can write themselves out of that one, although a possible way has been suggested above.

The cliffhanger with Zartan was fun, though. I'm anxious to see how they follow it up. I think it makes a good starting point. I'm not a huge G.I. Joe fan (never read the comics and don't remember ever watching the show), but just for the sake of variety, I'd also like to see the heroes and villains in more colourful outfits more akin to what they wore in cartoons and comics (I've seen pictures). This 'realistic' X-Men movies-type matching boring black outfits shit should stop (except for on the girls, where the skin tight outfits look fabulous) :D.

We've already had G.I Joe v. Transformers in all but name. All those American soldiers and military hardware shot in glorious slow-mo.

Heck, if Michael Bay weren't tied up with Transformers he would be my ideal choice to direct the next Joe movie.

I finally watched "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" and it is pretty much what the title is it is going to be...the Rise of Cobra. I found myself ignoring the appalling acting and how Tatum wasn't Duke at all but some imposter and enjoying it. It's not mentioned in the movie where Scarlett is from but I read in either the novelization or the official movie book that she is thought to be Canadian and that made me smile :) Not to mention laugh at the ridiculousness of it. I thought Dennis Quiad was a great General Hawk, Chris Ecceltson and Jospeh Gordon Lovitt was excellent as Cobra Commander. Sienna Miller was tolerable and nice to look at as the Baroness...so I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'd be game for a sequel. The "Zombieland" writers (I think they also wrote the Venom script) have a little hope that script will be better.

I was extremely disappointed in the first one, and I can't believe there's going to be a sequel. I'm just not interested in this nor The X-Men First Class. I'm not really interested in anything 'new' anymore.

So, this is happening. Just about enough time has passed that I had begun to think it was not going to. Be curious to see where they go with this.
I was not a huge Joe fan in the 80's so my expectations were lower on this than for Transformers.
Maybe they can take an average movie and do something great with the sequel. It was Rise of Cobra afterall. Now the pieces are in place and they should be able to make a more honest translation of the property.

Stephen Sommers has to come back to direct! Who else is going to be able to properly oversee the 150% increase in CGI?
