FX/editing wishlist/technical/related discussion for STNG-R

The fact is, recomposit or not, some of the FX will still look dodgy (especially the first 2 seasons as well as the classic "phaser fire out of the torpedo tube" blooper) HD or not, so when they announced no new FX my money was mentally repositioned from a future DVD purchase to being spent on something else.

You realize that all the compositing and F/X like phaser fire was done on video, right?

This means they will have to recut each episode again using modern techniques and they'll have to recreate these kind of F/X which will allow them to correct the error you mentioned.

I'm not even sure why anyone is arguing. Some will buy the new versions happily, others will not. Why bother to try and change the opinion of someone else?

We've gone through great pains to tell people the FX done on video (like the phaser) will all be redone....

Pretty much my feelings on the subject. My DVDs will do just fine, "fuzzy" or not.

Have either one of you seen the comparison shots?

I did, but since I don't do Blu-Ray it doesn't really mean anything to me. If they're going to re-release the show on DVD at £10/series I might consider it.

You have no idea what you are talking about, the difference is like night and day...and EVEN in the quick teaser trailer, the FX were spruced up...the lighting on the engines...the lights in the windows for example.

I don't own or want a Blu Ray player, so if this is a Blu Ray-only release I'm not buying it regardless of what it looks like.

I already own all seven series on DVD in the plastic clamshell cases and I paid full-price on Amazon as they were released, so if I'm going to buy them again I'm not paying any more than I did for TOS Remastered or what I will be paying for Voyager and Enterprise which is £10/series.

Trying to explain something to Captain Jack is pointless, and a waste of keystrokes. Back when the movies were released on BD, he insisted ad nauseum that they were merely upscaled SD versions. Many of us tried to explain that they weren't, but the conversation went nowhere.

And just to be clear, I'm not attacking Captain Jack personally. I assume he's a nice person, and he obviously loves Trek. He's certainly entitled to his opinions, but I was bitter that I (and others) wasted so much time trying to correct the misinformation he was posting.

No, it wasn't based upon misinformation, just indifference to seeing TV/Films in HD.

I don't do streaming services or broadcast TV, so I suppose if they don't do DVD or a reasonably priced, e.g. 50p/episode, iTunes sale then I can use my money for other things.

There wouldn't be much point to buying it on DVD. Okay, so they might fix a few of the goofs, but generally it's going to be identical to what you already own.

Of course.

I have an indifference to seeing low rez 480i (or 576i in your case) when I could be seeing them enhanced and in 1080p. Since I didn't spend my money on the inferior DVDs, I will be quite happy to spend it on the pristine Bluray versions which I have been waiting for.

If you have to see them at some point, maybe a friend of yours will let you watch them in HD!

Same here. I had already bought TNG on VHS for years from Columbia house so I couldn't really justify buying the DVDs. Now that we're getting it in HD I will definitely be purchasing it.

Well, I have been reading this thread. So let me replace the word "upscaling" with what? "Recomposit" from old 90's effects that I can produce better effects that on my computer?

They are rescanning all of the original elements into computers, and recompositing them 'with computers'. Do you not understand how much of a difference that can make? They'll have more control over the lighting, no matte lines, the ability to spruce up mistakes and planets with CGI.

Still gonna look terrible. Still gonna use the same 4-5 shots of the Enterprise flying by? uggghhh. Why even bother then?

The Enterprise going to warp in the teaser sure didn't look terrible, it looked fantastic.

If CBS had access to the original 'filmed' elements of the ships for TOS, I'm pretty sure they would have done the same thing. It would have been amazing to see what they could have done with the old TOS ship models with today's tech. They simply had no choice but to CGI everything in those instances, with TNG...they have all the film.

The reason for bothering? Well, the entire concept is to convert the show to HD...it's not some type of 'reimagining' of the show. Personally, I would like the show to be restored with all original elements, as it originally aired. This isn't some sort of revisionist project like the Star Wars movies...and thank goodness for that.

At a minimum, I'm expecting the up-res coming from the original negatives. At a minimum, for me to buy it, however, I expect to see new FX, new shots of the ship flying by or entering orbit, instead of the same 5 shots and that stupid through-the-neck-with-oddly-angled-stars shot, and those fuzzy JPEG globe planets.

I expect new, larger, 'alive' cg matte paintings like they did for TOS-R, new ship designs, better battle scenes, fixed FX errors, new planets like TOS-R, a redone intro, and little gems that they don't have to do, but will do for the sake of loving the source materials.

Star Trek 2 on BR still had a bit of irritating film grain on it. I know that many like film grain and whatnot, but I really wish they had cleaned that off the picture.

After TNG, I would love to see the movies remastered - giving us the Director's Edition of TMP in BR, maybe fix the the matte lines in TVH on the bird of prey, etc.

I agree with both of you. I'm sincerely hoping for a TOS-R style treatment to this project - 1080p, cleaned film, brightened and fixed colors, AND new FX, not just remaking the old FX. Either way, I will eventually be watching this version of TNG, through Netflix if they don't change much of anything, or through Blu-Ray if they make a concerted effort like in TOS-R.

In the picture I posted above from trekcore...the purplish and over-bright engine lighting is gone. Also its in 720p from a streaming source, so it'll look even clearer than the obvious clarity.

Also, the truer colors and better contrast likely of the imagery of the sampler is evident in the TATV photos...

Yeah people love that film grain...though I have heard that STII bluray is a much improved picture from the DVD version!
