I don't like the sound of Ho Chi Minh City since it's named after a commie.

Do you feel the same about Washington DC, since it's named after a slave-owner? ;)

Nah, but I don't like politicians in general.

Because colonialism is soooooooooo better.

If we're going to start disqualifying nations because of past communism/colonialism/etc we'll have to hold the Olympics in Antarctica.

It's not just about the history. It's the name associated with history. You don't call Berlin "Hitler City" or Baghdad "Saddamopolis."

It's definitely about history. Say whatever you want to about Ho Chi Minh. He won. That's why the city is named after him today.

Hitler and Saddam lost. History is written by the victors. Old saying, but true.

Sadly. I think they should change it back to Saigon. :rommie: I kinda liked how the Russians changed the one of their cities' name from Leningrad to St. Petersburg.

Do you realize they did when the USSR collapsed? Maybe they will rename Ho Chi Min City to Saigon when the Socialist Republic of Vietnam ceases to exist. And maybe they will rename Washington, DC as Georgetown when the Thirteen Colonies are taken back by the UK. Who knows? ;)

I thought Vietnam was purely democratic by now. I should brush up on my geography and history. So that's why they call it Ho Chi Minh City today. :guffaw:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a single-party state. Its current state constitution, which replaced the 1975 constitution in April 1992, asserts the central role of the Communist Party of Vietnam in all organs of government, politics and society. The General Secretary of the Communist Party performs numerous key administrative and executive functions, controlling the party's national organization and state appointments, as well as setting policy. Only political organizations affiliated with or endorsed by the Communist Party are permitted to contest elections in Vietnam. These include the Vietnamese Fatherland Front and worker and trade unionist parties. Although the state remains officially committed to socialism as its defining creed, its economic policies have grown increasingly capitalist,[56] with The Economist characterizing its leadership as "ardently capitalist communists".[57]

Mea culpa.
