Future Sites of the Summer Olympics

I guess the major challenge in a large metropolitan area like San Francisco is always the traffic/overcrowding. But really, all you'd need is less than a square mile of empty lot to build the Olympic Village, stadium, and aquatic center.

I cant envision where in SF they could put the Olympics. This city is very densely built, the traffic is already a nightmare, theres only the usual number of athletic facilities for a big city and noplace to build more. There isnt a square mile of empty anything in the city limits.

Plus the potential for disruptive protestors is off the charts. Most people I know snub the Olympics as a farcical corporate boondoggle, put on for the benefit of McDonalds and Visa.

But the marathon around Golden Gate Park and maybe across the bridge would be fun to see...

San Diego. We could use something slightly more athletic than Comic Con...

I can see NYC vbeing chosen in the future. Many of the things that were talked about being built for the 2012 Olympic bid have actually BEEN built so there are plenty of facilities. Since 2005 when the first bid was put in, NYC has built two new baseball stadiums and a new basketball stadium. Right across the river in jersey a new football stadium (american football), a new soccer stadium have been built. The city already has extensive 24 hour mass transit so it makes sense as a site.

The facilities are here and already in place, only thing that would really need to be built is the Olympic Stadium, and they could probably just re-purpose one of the existing facilities that the city has.

Well N. America might be favourite for the 2020 summer games

2016 S. America
2012 Europe
2008 Asia
2004 Europe
2000 Australia
1996 N. America

I think after a 24 year gap N. America stands a very good chance.

Except for the fact that the only candidate cities are Toyko, Istanbul, and Madrid. 2020 Summer Olympics.

Toronto might be trying for 2024 though if the Pan Am Games in a few years work out successfully.

Any Middle Eastern country would raise huge security concerns, for very good reasons. Playing devil's advocate, the 1936 Olympics were held in Nazi Germany and the International Olympic Committee basically told Hilter that he had to allow Negroes and other minorities to participate on equal grounds or the games go elsewhere. So the same could be applied with the some Islamic nations views toward women.

If a Middle Eastern country is to be considered, I'd say Istanbul, Turkey would be the best bet. An ancient city rich with both Islamic and Christian history, in one of the most stable countries in the region. Certainly women's rights wouldn't be an issue there.

I, too, would be interested to see Istanbul host the 2020 games. The link that Steven posted has some useful information regarding the future Olympics, including the three cities that put in their bids. I didn't realize a lot of the cities I mentioned decided to withdraw their bids for the summer games. Las Vegas, one of my favorite cities, has a lot of potential, although it's hot as hell in the summer.

Qatar got the 2022 Football World Cup, the next biggest event after the Summer Olympics. And security will absolutely not be an issue imo, it will be super-tightly controlled.

And the IOC has proven by selecting Beijing they couldn't care less about human rights or anything like that.

I am not sure how the process works but couldn't Chicago have tried again for 2020?

I'd like to see Tallinn, Estonia for the Olympics.

I think the US Olympic committee decided to not try for 2020 and concentrate is full efforts into either 2022 or 2024

Seriously after the HUGE slap in the face that Chicago got for 2016 after putting together a really tight bid and had a lot of things in its favor...I'm not sure how viable any bid could be in the future.

Plus the politics behind the scenes at the IOC has been increasingly anti-American so future bids from the US will be met with even more hostility.

Yeah, 8 Olympic Games and counting, the same number as the 2nd and 3rd all time hosts put together. The IOC is definitely anti-American.

Frankly it's about time some other countries get their shot at hosting if they want it.

Just as long as every other game host is somewhere in Europe ;)
