Future of the Defiant (class) post Nemesis

Yeah, I think it is safe to say that they'll be around until at least the early 25th century. In DS9 and VOY, we saw that many Defiant-classes had been created. It doesn't seem like Starfleet feels the ship is messed up...
I'd say it definitely had a future as sort of a frontier patroller, convoy duty or even some sort of enforcement ship (hunting pirates etc). Basically any time you need a "tough little ship" with some serious muscle to go against overwhelming odds.
Smallish, extremely well armed and highly manueverable is always a good thing. And wih upgrades, should last a while in any armed force of Federation. I think they'll have to revisit the ablative armor issue. A Galaxy or Sovereign class hull would make it a ship in a class by itself. According to some arguments, anyway.
The Defiant-class will remain in service for quite a while I imagine. It is a small ship and they can build more of them than larger ships of equal strength. I would also expect that they can build them faster because they are smaller (one would think anyway).
Wouldn't surprise me if they weren't the Miranda's of the 25th century...

The Defiants have limited uses, but are extremely good at patrol and combat. Apart from DS9's own Defiant, I doubt the class is used much for exploration. The science facilities are too limited. It's far better to send a larger ship such as a Galaxy or an Akira. I have little doubt, though, that the Romulans, Breen, Tzenkethi, and Cardassians will see Defiants patrolling their borders for a very long time to come.
IMO, starships in general can be used for a wide variety of purposes--it's just that some are better at some jobs than others hence their possible designations as an escort, or an explorer, etc.
I think that the Defiant-class will be in production for the forseeable future. In fact, I would argue that the need for them is even greater now than it was during the initial Borg threat because of the potentially weakened state of the Federation's defenses after the Dominion War. But even if Starfleet is returned to full strength, Defiant-class ships could also be used for some non-defense oriented missions at the frontier such as limited logistical support and emergency rescue operations. Defiant-class ships could even be used for some short-term scientific endeavors, if necessary, IMO...

I have to agree. Starfleet would be wise to mass produce Defiant-class ships to get their fleet back up to respectable levels while the larger ships are being built. In the time it takes to build a Galaxy-class or Sovereign-class ship, they can probably put out a half dozen or more Defiant-class ships.
I also have this same perception of the Defiant ships. Was thinking of choosing it as my first ship to captain.
The Defiant class seems like a spectacular option as a Sol defense force maybe a small fleet of 5 or 6 would be able to protect Sol long enough for a larger fleet to arrive in the event of an attack.
One would think that the capital star system of the Federation would be more heavily guarded then the "Mars Defense Perimeter" which consisted of 3 drone ships that couldn't even get one shot off before being destroyed.

The Defiant class proved extremely succesful against the Dominion and held up pretty well against a Borg Cube and judging by the threat that Shinzon brought even after the Dominion war it seems pretty evident the Defiant class will not only be in service for quite a long time but will also be upgraded with more advanced technologies, the Federation is under constant threat and theres no knowing what might come next, its more logical to keep the Defiant class alive.
I don't think they would be a good replacement. The Miranda seemed much more versatile then the Defiant seems to be. Plus the Miranda is quite a bit bigger, its around 100m longer and a fair bit wider.
For some reason I've always thought that the Norway would make a nice replacement for the Miranda. The class just has that sort of jack of all trades feel about it in my opinion.
The Defiant-class is its own class altogether. It would never replace another class in the fleet because its main focus is on being a warship. As has been said, it would be a good patrol vessel, convoy escort, system defense (put 40 of these little guys in a system and you have a good defense until reinforcements arrive), etc.

The Defiant was made to help counter the Borg threat... if you accept 'First Contact' as canon...then the threat remains. Thus then the Defiant or its successor class ships still have a mission post Nemesis.
