I have to agree. Starfleet would be wise to mass produce Defiant-class ships to get their fleet back up to respectable levels while the larger ships are being built. In the time it takes to build a Galaxy-class or Sovereign-class ship, they can probably put out a half dozen or more Defiant-class ships.C.E. Evans said:
IMO, starships in general can be used for a wide variety of purposes--it's just that some are better at some jobs than others hence their possible designations as an escort, or an explorer, etc.
I think that the Defiant-class will be in production for the forseeable future. In fact, I would argue that the need for them is even greater now than it was during the initial Borg threat because of the potentially weakened state of the Federation's defenses after the Dominion War. But even if Starfleet is returned to full strength, Defiant-class ships could also be used for some non-defense oriented missions at the frontier such as limited logistical support and emergency rescue operations. Defiant-class ships could even be used for some short-term scientific endeavors, if necessary, IMO...

I'd say it definitely had a future as sort of a frontier patroller, convoy duty or even some sort of enforcement ship (hunting pirates etc). Basically any time you need a "tough little ship" with some serious muscle to go against overwhelming odds.

I imagine the Defiant would be a good replacement for the Miranda class ships, as they are very similar in size and could probably be produced in such great numbers.
