The talks, which include negotiations over specific remedies, come after politicians including Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have for weeks urged California Attorney General Rob Bonta to settle the case. The 12 states, led by Bonta, sued in July to stop the $111 billion merger, which would upend Hollywood by combining two rival companies into an entertainment and media powerhouse.

The politics of the situation and likely outcomes are not on Bonta's side.
