Future of Paramount+ among merger talks

^ Thanks!

My read on the exchange here - I’ve copied over the transcript from the episode - is that Belloni is being thorough enough in his recognition of upcoming cost-cutting measures to include Star Trek in the list of important considerations. I don’t know that I would go so far as to say he’s especially glum on Trek’s prospects right now, but then, I don’t follow him closely. Regardless, it’s, y’know, unknown times over there.

“I also think people in town are kind of in denial about what's about to happen at Paramount in general.”

“100 percent, which is what I tried to get at in my newsletter a little bit. There is about to be a lot, like if they think there's been a lot of layoffs and cost cutting at Paramount to date, it's only going to get worse.”

“Yeah, Colbert is only the beginning. I mean, these Star Trek shows are in jeopardy. The Taylor Sheridan shows, do they go after Lioness or one of the lower rated Taylor Sheridan shows?”

Puck’s Matt Belloni said on his podcast that all of the Paramount+ Star Trek shows are in jeopardy to be canceled by the new regime.
Zero surprise here.

That's ok; no one liked them and they were an anathema to Roddenberry's good name and Star Trek. From what I've been told online people don't watch these shows; they only watch 2005 or before Star Trek.

It's time for the reckoning.

Trek is P+'s weapon against Marvel.

I'd take this with a shovelful of salt (Sci-Trek was predicting that Sony would buy Paramount.)

The merger is set to close August 7th.

I love Star Trek with all my heart, but that’s a bit of a stretch imo.

What else do they have?

^ Thanks!

Sheridan is a rainmaker. He's generated billions in value for Paramount.

They'd be a fool to dump him.

Longer seasons (even if they break into halfs or whatever) and better character development.

There aren't going to be longer seasons. (Why do it if they don't have to?)

I don’t think they have a weapon against Marvel, per se. Taylor Sheridan’s stuff is completely in different genres, of course, and it’s maybe the closest they’ve got. Star Trek just isn’t in remotely the same cultural sphere these days.

And yeah, I certainly agree that it would questionable to ditch Sheridan. He’s going to want a ton of money on the next contract, but that’s something Skydance is no doubt prepared to handle.

Canceling a show or two, as Belloni speculates might occur, won’t necessarily damage Skydance leadership’s position with Taylor Sheridan irreparably, however.

Taylor Sheridan is very close to Paramount CEO Chris McCarthy who has been fired and will depart the company on Monday. That could possibly be a very big deal, it could lead to Sheridan leaving the company for a rival.

"Skydance Will End DEI Initiatives at Paramount and Bolster News Integrity at CBS"

Key Commitments: Phasing Out DEI and Enhancing Accountability

Skydance’s letter to the FCC, penned by General Counsel Stephanie Kyoko McKinnon, explicitly states that post-merger, “New Paramount” will dismantle all existing DEI frameworks.

This includes:
  • Ceasing numerical goals tied to race, ethnicity, sex, or gender for job applicants and employees.
  • Excluding these characteristics from promotion criteria and compensation plans.
  • Eliminating minimum spending requirements for diverse suppliers.
  • Removing DEI references from internal training, social media, websites, and business conduct statements.
  • Closing the Office of Global Inclusion and reallocating employee resource groups under human resources, with a new focus on “employee culture and engagement.”

Marvel's movies haven't been doing well lately (The Marvels, Thunderbolts*)

That’s truuue, but I’m just talking in terms of cultural cache, you know?

In any case, I’m not certain David Ellison would necessarily feel the need for anything to rival Marvel in the sense we might consider such a thing. He wants to make money. Whether that means cowboys, American football, starship captains, comedy skits, or all of the above!

For what does it profit a studio to succeed in a corporate merger, but lose all the talent they work with?

Something similar has been suggested on the Tachyon Pulse Podcast before.

The new regime is looking to cut costs in a major way.
That’s why the idea that will shut down P+ makes no sense, as its finally turning a profit.
