Futurama: Jurassic Bark...

If you've ever had a Dog that you saw every day and looked after for many years you'd get it.

I've had several dogs in my lifetime. Outlived 'em all. But I still don't get it. Now, if a human loved one died, I'd get it. Lost my mom and both grandparents, all three of which raised me. But animals are not people. They are something you own.

No offense meant to people who love their pets, but in the end, that's all they are: pets.

Yeah I don't get that at all. I wouldn't grieve for a dog the same amount as I would a human family member, of course, but why have them if you're not going to love them? And if you love them, why not grieve for them? I certainly never consider my dogs as "things" I "own". Look after, yes, but not own.

Pet -

  • a domesticated animal kept for companionship or amusement
  • darling: a special loved one
Everyone makes fun of my cat, she is 18 and everyone thinks she should just be killed. She is happy and is loving and happy. Plus I like her more than most of my family, and I have seen her 1,000,000,000 times more often than most my family. Plus I have had her since I was 5 and hardly can remember a time when she wasn't around.

I really hate this episode now. I just watched it again recently (had only seen it once or twice before) and was shocked by how bad it was. I thought even if I hadn't seen it, I could see the ending coming a mile away and it was a very maudlin and uninspired one. I was curious about how it would hold up knowing that it's considered one of the best Futurama episodes by many fans and was very disappointed. I don't know, maybe it's because I've never had a pet, but the plot and the ending did nothing for me, and I'm usually a sucker for this sentimental stuff on Futurama.

I think part of the problem is that I've seen Futurama do this exact same thing more effectively too many times now. They had pretty much the same ending for "Luck of the Fryish", "Leela's Homeworld", and "Time Keeps on Slipping", as the episode ends with a really touching reveal that is shown while some very appropriately sentimental music is played. In "Luck of the Fryish", I find the ending incredibly moving and tearjerking every time. Same goes for "Leela's Homeworld" and even with only the whistling of a goofy tune, the end of "Time Keeps On Slipping" is quite heartwrenching as well.

They got me thrice, but this time it just didn't work. I thought it was too melodramatic and obvious. Great song, though. The one thing I think is as well done here as it was in the other examples is the choice of song. Very beautiful and perfect for the situation. I just didn't think the story and the character were built up strongly enough this time to make the ending as affecting.
